Ethiopia beat China by 20,896 tonnes for the 2023 broad-beans lead — 1,009,860 against 988,964 in a 2,779,387-tonne table across 128 reporters. Five years netted 18,009 tonnes as Ethiopia's 158,428-tonne climb absorbed Egypt's 112,756-tonne slide and China's 89,304-tonne dip. Egypt halved in the latest year alone, down 119,200 tonnes to 113,981. Per person Ethiopia runs first too at 21.5 grams a day.

Ethiopia's 2023 broad-beans total of 1,009,860 tonnes beat China's 988,964 by 20,896 tonnes, with Egypt third at 113,981. Ethiopia's 21.5 grams a day also topped the per-person list, ahead of Tunisia at 7.14 and Libya at 6.44.

• Ethiopia added 158,428 tonnes over the five-year period, while the combined total rose by only 18,009 tonnes as larger declines elsewhere offset most of the increase.

Ethiopia and China tower over the rest: 1,009,860 and 988,964 tonnes against Egypt's 113,981 in third. Italy holds fourth at 79,988 and Peru fifth at 66,182. Together the top two cover 71.9 percent of the total; the top five reach 81.3 percent and the top ten 88.1 percent. Ethiopia's per-person figure of 21.5 grams a day triples Tunisia's 7.14 in second.

Eighteen Thousand Tonnes Net After Hundred-Thousand Swings

The 112 reporters present in both 2019 and 2023 moved from 2,754,537 tonnes to 2,772,546 — up 18,009 tonnes, or 0.7 percent. The 2019 universe holds 113 reporters with values against 128 in 2023; three tiny reporters holding only zero or near-zero 2019 values left, while six small reporters entered. Offsetting hundreds of thousands: Ethiopia up 158,428 (18.6 percent), Egypt down 112,756 (49.7 percent), China down 89,304 (8.3 percent). Behind them Poland added 28,614 (448.1 percent) from 6,386 tonnes, Libya 14,168 (472.7 percent), India 11,841 (701.5 percent), New Zealand 10,000 from zero and Yemen 7,652 (126.4 percent).

2023 Fell 4.2 Percent as Egypt Halved

The 127 reporters present in both 2022 and 2023 moved from 2,901,724 tonnes to 2,779,251 — down 122,473 tonnes, or 4.2 percent. Egypt's 119,200-tonne halving (down 51.1 percent) and China's 57,256-tonne dip (down 5.5 percent) set the direction; Ethiopia's 35,225-tonne gain (up 3.6 percent) leaned the other way. Morocco dropped 19,282 (down 29.9 percent) and Iraq 19,075 (down 86.9 percent) while Libya jumped 13,898 (up 425.4 percent), India 11,360 (up 523.7 percent) and New Zealand entered at 10,000 tonnes with no 2022 value.

Methodology

Every percentage here divides by the earlier endpoint year, across reporters holding values in both years. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts supply the tonnes (element 5141, food supply quantity) and the daily grams per person (element 665) — for broad beans and horse beans, dry, 2019 through 2023. Supply available for human consumption in the reference year is what gets counted, not intake. Zero-base years yield no percentage; a zero reports zero and a blank reports nothing.

The tables admit reporters only — 129 of them held a value in at least one year from 2019 through 2023 — with World, regional and China (aggregate) rows left out; China is the China reporter. Tonnes stand as FAO published them, unrounded, and the 2023 listed total of 2,779,387 tonnes adds the 128 reporters with a 2023 value.
