Unrendered Buffalo Fat Supply by Country
Pakistan had the largest reported supply of unrendered buffalo fat in 2023, at 80,774 tonnes, accounting for about 82.5 percent of the 97,936-tonne total. Egypt ranked second at 5,430 tonnes, followed by Nepal at 2,203 tonnes and the Philippines at 1,675 tonnes. Pakistan also led per-capita supply at 0.89 grams per person per day, ahead of Laos at 0.27 grams and Nepal at 0.20 grams. The figures come from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts and measure food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten.
The Philippines placed fourth at 1,675 tonnes, with Venezuela fifth at 1,418 and Vietnam sixth at 1,267. Indonesia, Myanmar, Laos and Thailand closed the top ten between 579 and 958 tonnes. The top three held 90.3 percent of the annual listed food supply total. Pakistan had the highest listed food supply, while Pakistan also had the highest per-capita food supply. Nepal lost 1,468 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 40.0 percent to 2,203 tonnes. Egypt lost 347 tonnes, down 6.0 percent. Thailand shed 68 tonnes, down 10.5 percent. Pakistan added 2,317 tonnes, up 3.0 percent. Colombia added 111 tonnes, up 38.8 percent. Venezuela added 62 tonnes, up 4.6 percent. The 24 countries present in both years rose from 97,241 tonnes, up 696 tonnes, or 0.7 percent, with no departures and no arrivals. Between 2019 and 2023, the 22 countries present in both years rose from 90,002 tonnes to 96,480 tonnes, up 6,478 tonnes, or 7.2 percent. Pakistan added 8,935 tonnes, up 12.4 percent. Türkiye added 325 tonnes from almost nothing in 2019. Sri Lanka added 178 tonnes, up 129.6 percent. Nepal lost 1,363 tonnes, down 38.2 percent. Myanmar shed 812 tonnes, down 46.4 percent. Vietnam gave up 493 tonnes, down 28.0 percent. Two countries arrived with 1,457 tonnes, and none left. Pakistan's 0.89 grams a day topped the table, ahead of Laos at 0.27 and Nepal at 0.20. Venezuela sat fourth at 0.14 grams, with Egypt at 0.13 and Myanmar at 0.05. Timor-Leste, Cambodia, the Philippines and Sri Lanka followed at 0.04 to 0.05 grams. Vietnam, Colombia and Thailand followed below 0.03 grams. Pakistan therefore leads the table both by total food supply and by food supply per person. Unrendered buffalo fat for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. Pakistan accounted for most of the reported tonnage in 2023, while the total across reporting countries increased only slightly from 2022. The figures represent food available for human consumption, not actual intake. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts mark tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for unrendered buffalo fat across 2019-2023. Percentages use the earlier year as the base, and zero bases use none. The dataset covers 24 reporting countries, all with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2019-2023 comparison uses 22 countries with reported values at both endpoints; India and Venezuela have blank 2019 values and are excluded from that comparison. The 2023 listed total of 97,936 tonnes is the sum of the 23 countries with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.
