Sheep Fat, Unrendered Consumption by Country

Syria reported the largest food supply of unrendered sheep fat in 2023, at 25,818 tonnes, about 16.7 percent of the listed total of 154,327 tonnes. Pakistan ranked second at 18,665 tonnes, followed by Uzbekistan at 9,408. Mongolia had the highest food supply per person, at 3.11 grams per day. These FAO figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.

Key findings: Syria had the largest listed food supply of unrendered sheep fat in 2023, at 25,818 tonnes, followed by Pakistan at 18,665 tonnes and Uzbekistan at 9,408 tonnes. Mongolia ranked first in food supply per person, at 3.11 grams per day, ahead of Syria at 3.00 grams. The reported 2023 total was 154,327 tonnes. These figures represent food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.

Saudi Arabia placed fourth at 9,187 tonnes, with Algeria fifth at 8,339 and Russia sixth at 5,841. Australia, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Iraq closed the top ten between 5,047 and 5,731 tonnes. The top three held 34.9 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 46.3 percent.

• Russia added 3,260 tonnes, up 126.3 percent.
• Saudi Arabia added 2,109 tonnes, up 29.8 percent.
• New Zealand added 1,918 tonnes, up 656.3 percent, from a small base.
• Jordan lost 2,380 tonnes, down 37.3 percent.

Changes from 2022 to 2023

Jordan lost 2,380 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 37.3 percent to 4,001 tonnes. Yemen lost 2,065 tonnes, down 34.0 percent. Mongolia shed 488 tonnes, down 11.1 percent. Russia added 3,260 tonnes, up 126.3 percent. Saudi Arabia added 2,109 tonnes, up 29.8 percent. New Zealand added 1,918 tonnes, up 656.3 percent. The 119 countries with reported values in both years rose from 147,761 tonnes to 154,239 tonnes, up 6,478 tonnes, or 4.4 percent. Ireland reported 87.96 tonnes in 2023 with no 2022 value in the supplied table.

Five-Year Changes in Sheep Fat Supply

Between 2019 and 2023, the 118 countries with reported values in both years rose from 128,993 tonnes to 154,238 tonnes, up 25,245 tonnes, or 19.6 percent. Syria added 10,651 tonnes, up 70.2 percent. Australia added 5,731 tonnes from a reported 2019 zero, so no five-year percentage is calculated for it. Saudi Arabia added 3,829 tonnes, up 71.5 percent. Mongolia lost 2,941 tonnes, down 43.0 percent. Greece gave up 2,188 tonnes, down 78.8 percent. Yemen shed 1,465 tonnes, down 26.7 percent. Cuba, with 379.85 tonnes in 2019, reported no later values; Cape Verde and Ireland first reported values in the window, totalling about 89 tonnes in 2023.

Sheep Fat Supply per Person

Mongolia ranked first in 2023 at 3.11 grams per person per day, ahead of Syria at 3.00 grams. Bahrain placed third at 2.44 grams, followed by Turkmenistan at 2.12 grams. New Zealand reported 1.17 grams and Jordan 0.96 grams, with Oman at 0.87 and Albania at 0.81. Saudi Arabia followed at 0.76 grams and Uzbekistan at 0.72 grams, ahead of Australia, Israel, Lebanon and Algeria. Mauritania reported 0.45 grams and Afghanistan 0.35 grams. These figures describe food supply per person, not measured individual intake.

What the Data Covers

Unrendered sheep fat for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. The dataset includes 121 countries and areas that reported a value in at least one year; 120 have a reported value for 2023. Annual totals sum the reporting countries and areas for each year, excluding aggregate rows. Comparisons between years use only countries and areas with values at both endpoints.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts report sheep fat food supply in tonnes under element 5141 and in grams per person per day under element 665. This page covers the 2019-2023 period. Annual totals sum the reporting countries and areas with a value for the relevant year; aggregate rows are excluded. Year-to-year comparisons include only countries and areas with values in both comparison years. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that value is zero. Reported zeros are retained, while blank cells indicate missing values. These figures describe food available for human consumption and should not be interpreted as direct measurements of the amount people actually ate.
