What the Buffalo Milk Butter Data Measures

The dataset reports buffalo milk butter food supply in tonnes and grams per person per day for eight countries over 2019-2023. Total tonnage measures the reported quantity available for human consumption, while the per-capita indicator adjusts supply for population size. Neither measure confirms how much people actually ate. In 2023, India accounted for 58.2 percent of the reported total, while Pakistan had the highest per-capita figure.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts provide food-supply figures for buffalo milk butter in tonnes (element 5141) and grams per person per day (element 665) for 2019-2023. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base; percentage changes are not calculated when the base value is zero. After aggregate rows are excluded, the dataset covers eight countries, all with reported values for 2023. Comparisons use countries with reported values at both endpoints. The 2023 total is the sum of the eight reporting countries. Reported zeroes are retained, blanks are treated as missing, and values below 1,000 tonnes retain two decimal places.
