Cantaloupes and Other Melons Consumption by Country
China supplied 12,030,914 tonnes of cantaloupes and other melons in 2023, accounting for 49.2 percent of the listed total of 24,440,282 tonnes. India followed with 1,369,591 tonnes, while Kazakhstan ranked third at 1,248,676 tonnes and had the highest per-person supply at 168.27 grams per day. The figures cover food available for human consumption in 172 countries, including 168 with a reported 2023 value, from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023.
Direct Answer
Direct answer: China had the largest listed supply of cantaloupes and other melons in 2023, at 12,030,914 tonnes, equal to 49.2 percent of the listed total. India ranked second with 1,369,591 tonnes, while Kazakhstan ranked third with 1,248,676 tonnes. Kazakhstan had the highest per-person supply at 168.27 grams per person per day. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten.
The United States placed fourth at 860,878 tonnes, with Afghanistan fifth at 681,934 and Brazil sixth at 625,597. Türkiye, Iran, Bangladesh and Mexico closed the top ten between 461,635 and 623,785 tonnes. The top three held 59.9 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 66.3 percent. Egypt lost 520,212 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, falling 56.0 percent to 408,127 tonnes. Iraq lost 170,164 tonnes, down 46.9 percent. Guatemala shed 129,215 tonnes, down 30.3 percent. Iran added 236,856 tonnes, up 73.8 percent to 557,959 tonnes. China added 204,514 tonnes, up 1.7 percent. Brazil added 155,097 tonnes, up 33.0 percent. Kazakhstan added 121,234 tonnes, up 10.8 percent, and Italy 102,585 tonnes, up 29.7 percent. The 167 countries present in both years inched from 24,434,237 tonnes to 24,440,282 tonnes, up 6,044 tonnes, effectively unchanged. Between 2019 and 2023, the 162 countries present in both years advanced from 21,897,881 tonnes to 24,438,015 tonnes, up 2,540,134 tonnes, or 11.6 percent. China added 737,721 tonnes, up 6.5 percent, accounting for 29.0 percent of the net gain. Kazakhstan added 383,496 tonnes, up 44.3 percent. Pakistan added 359,382 tonnes from a tiny base. Bangladesh added 327,707 tonnes, up 156.2 percent. Egypt added 301,384 tonnes, up 282.3 percent. Brazil added 293,309 tonnes, up 88.3 percent, and Afghanistan 289,557 tonnes, up 73.8 percent. Iran lost 323,416 tonnes, down 36.7 percent. One country left with 41,713 tonnes, against six arrivals with 2,267. Kazakhstan led Afghanistan's 45.07 grams in second and Guatemala's 44.85 in third by a wide margin. Albania followed at 44.61 grams, with Morocco at 25.82 and Oman at 24.49. China sat at 23.17 grams. Kazakhstan pairs third-place tonnage with about 3.7 times Afghanistan's figure, giving it a substantial lead over every other country in the ranking. Cantaloupes and other melons for human consumption are recorded in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. The near-zero net change masks substantial movements among individual countries: half a million tonnes vanished in Egypt while a quarter-million reappeared in Iran. Egypt jumped to 928,339 tonnes in 2022 from 106,743 in 2019, then retreated to 408,127, so both its long gain and its latest loss describe the same jump. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts code tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for cantaloupes and other melons across 2019-2023. Percentages divide by the earlier year, and no percentage is calculated when that base is zero. The universe counts 172 countries after aggregates are removed, 168 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total is the sum of the 168 countries with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.
