Cereals, Other Consumption by Country
FAO Food Balances data show that Ethiopia had the largest listed food supply of other cereals in 2023, at 6,095 thousand tonnes, followed by the United States at 1,689 thousand tonnes and the Netherlands at 699 thousand tonnes. Ethiopia also had the highest per-capita food supply at 47.36 kilograms per person per year. The dataset covers 174 reporters and spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values in individual years.
Ethiopia had the highest listed other cereals food supply in 2023 at 6,095 thousand tonnes, while Ethiopia also had the highest per-capita food supply at 47.36 kilograms per person per year. Ethiopia's listed food supply was 3.61 times the United States figure (6,095 thousand tonnes against 1,689), and the top ten reporters hold 83.1 percent of the listed total. In 2023, Ethiopia had the largest listed supply of other cereals at 6,095 thousand tonnes, followed by the United States at 1,689 thousand tonnes. The Netherlands ranked third with 699 thousand tonnes. On a per-capita basis, Ethiopia recorded the highest food supply at 47.36 kilograms per person per year, followed by Liberia at 38.75 kilograms. Across the 173 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, listed other cereals supply increased by 577 thousand tonnes, or 4.9 percent. Liberia contributed 213 thousand tonnes from a zero 2022 base. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of other cereals actually eaten. The 2023 distribution is dominated by one reporter. Ethiopia accounted for 49.3 percent of the listed total, while the top three reporters together accounted for 68.6 percent. The top five reporters hold 77.0 percent and the top ten 83.1 percent of the 12,368-thousand-tonne total. Only the United States, with 1,689 thousand tonnes, comes within 4,000 thousand tonnes of Ethiopia. The Netherlands follows at 699 thousand tonnes and Russia at 555 thousand tonnes. Among the 173 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 11,791 thousand tonnes to 12,368 thousand tonnes, a gain of 577 thousand tonnes (4.9 percent). The annual listed totals across all reporters were 11,791 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 12,368 thousand tonnes in 2023. Liberia added 213 thousand tonnes from a zero 2022 base, accounting for 36.9 percent of the increase, followed by the Netherlands with 177 thousand tonnes (up 33.9 percent) and Ethiopia with 143 thousand tonnes (up 2.4 percent). Argentina added 55 thousand tonnes (up 305.6 percent), Laos 43 thousand tonnes (up 148.3 percent) and Kazakhstan 39 thousand tonnes (up 44.8 percent), while Chile fell 67 thousand tonnes (down 59.3 percent) and Peru 37 thousand tonnes (down 47.4 percent). For the 173 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 10,220 thousand tonnes to 12,368 thousand tonnes, a gain of 2,148 thousand tonnes (21.0 percent). The 2019 total includes 174 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 173; Cuba, with 1 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no positive 2023 value. Ethiopia added 796 thousand tonnes (up 15.0 percent), accounting for 37.1 percent of the increase, followed by the United States with 455 thousand tonnes (up 36.9 percent), the Netherlands with 281 thousand tonnes (up 67.2 percent), Liberia with 213 thousand tonnes from a zero 2019 base, and Poland with 78 thousand tonnes (up 152.9 percent). Russia added 66 thousand tonnes (up 13.5 percent) and Belgium 48 thousand tonnes (up 400.0 percent), while Indonesia fell 52 thousand tonnes (down 98.1 percent). The increase was spread across several reporters, although Ethiopia accounted for the largest share of the overall gain. Ethiopia accounts for just over a third of the 2019-2023 increase, and the next three reporters add another 44.2 percent between them. Ethiopia also leads both measures, first by total and first per capita at 47.36 kilograms, while the United States records 4.92 kilograms. For FAO Food Balances, the other cereals figure used here is the amount recorded under the Food element of the "Cereals, other" item. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year, rather than a direct estimate of how much these cereals people actually ate. It includes products such as buckwheat, quinoa, fonio, triticale, popcorn, canary seed, mixed grain and other cereals not elsewhere specified, and excludes the cereals listed separately in the food balance, namely wheat, rice, maize, barley, rye, oats, millet and sorghum. The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population. In 2023, Ethiopia had the largest listed food supply of other cereals at 6,095 thousand tonnes, while the country also had the highest per-capita food supply at 47.36 kilograms per person per year. The data cover 174 reporters and represent food available for human consumption in FAO Food Balances, not the amount of other cereals actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Cereals, other from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the quantity actually eaten, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer. The reporter universe contains 174 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances are compiled from national and other official sources. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 12,368 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 173 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.Key Takeaways

Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Which cereals are counted under "Cereals, other"?
The item covers products such as buckwheat, quinoa, fonio, triticale, popcorn, canary seed and mixed grain. It groups cereals not already listed separately in the food balance, so it excludes wheat, rice, maize, barley, rye, oats, millet and sorghum. Countries with a large share of minor cereals such as teff, fonio or triticale therefore appear here.
Why did Liberia add 213 thousand tonnes between 2022 and 2023?
Liberia was recorded at zero in 2022 and 213 thousand tonnes in 2023, so the increase has no percentage rate from a zero base. It accounts for 36.9 percent of the common-reporter increase in the year.
Is other cereals food supply the same as other cereals eaten?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
