Coal Production by Country
Coal production by country measures how much coal each country produces, expressed in tonnes. The figures refer to mine production, in line with the underlying sources. The statistics are based on Our World in Data, which compiles them from the BGS World Mineral Statistics. The table below lists 67 countries that recorded coal production during the period. The main comparison uses 2023 data, the latest year available, which 66 of the countries report; Spain's latest output dates from 2018.
China produced the most coal in 2023 with 4,710,000,000 tonnes, by far the largest producer. India ranked second with 1,010,691,000, followed by Indonesia (775,181,855), the United States (524,641,049), and Australia (466,923,000). Russia (430,000,000), South Africa (231,685,072), Kazakhstan (112,740,600), Germany (102,245,000), and Poland (94,531,000) complete the top ten. China alone accounted for about 52 percent of the world's coal production in 2023, and India for about 11 percent; the top three producers together accounted for about 71 percent. Only China produced more than 2 billion tonnes in 2023, while India, Indonesia, and the United States were the only countries above 500 million tonnes. In Asia, China (4,710,000,000) leads by a wide margin, ahead of India (1,010,691,000) and Indonesia (775,181,855). Kazakhstan (112,740,600), Mongolia (85,262,300), Vietnam (47,258,700), and Pakistan (15,069,760) follow, while Uzbekistan (6,519,600) and Bangladesh (820,000) are smaller. In Europe, Russia (430,000,000) is the largest producer, ahead of Germany (102,245,000), Poland (94,531,000), and Turkey (81,902,722). Serbia (31,934,000), Czechia (29,660,000), Ukraine (23,300,000), and Bulgaria (21,811,000) follow. In the Americas, the United States (524,641,049) leads, ahead of Colombia (57,620,000), Canada (48,067,394), and Brazil (10,279,780). Mexico (7,000,000), Venezuela (149,000), and Chile (121,570) follow. In Africa, South Africa (231,685,072) leads by a wide margin, ahead of Mozambique (15,000,000), Zimbabwe (4,898,735), and Tanzania (3,256,481). Botswana (2,064,373), Nigeria (1,322,050), and Zambia (706,115) follow. In Oceania, Australia (466,923,000) is the largest producer, ahead of New Zealand (2,600,084). China recorded the largest increase between 2018 and 2023, rising from 3,698,000,000 to 4,710,000,000 tonnes (up 1,012,000,000). India added 237,691,000, from 773,000,000 to 1,010,691,000, and Indonesia 217,408,915, from 557,772,940 to 775,181,855. Mongolia added 33,861,000, from 51,401,300 to 85,262,300. The United States recorded the largest decline between 2018 and 2023, falling from 685,843,555 to 524,641,049 tonnes (down 161,202,506). Germany declined by 66,775,371, from 169,020,371 to 102,245,000, Australia by 35,680,000, and Poland by 30,427,000. Colombia fell by 28,635,214, while Greece declined by 22,574,360. The statistics are based on Our World in Data, which compiles national coal production figures from the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with major processing by Our World in Data. Values refer to mine production of coal, in tonnes, based on mined rather than refined production. The main comparison uses 2023 data, the latest year available. Country-level figures are available in the source from 2002 onwards; the table covers the latest six years, 2018–2023. In the table, a zero reflects no production, while an empty cell means that no value was reported.Countries With the Largest Coal Production in 2023

Frequently Asked Questions
Which country produces the most coal?
China produced the most coal in 2023 with 4,710,000,000 tonnes, followed by India (1,010,691,000) and Indonesia (775,181,855).
How many countries are included in the dataset?
The table lists 67 countries that record coal mine production, based on Our World in Data figures compiled from BGS sources.
What does this indicator measure?
It measures coal mine production in tonnes, based on mined rather than refined production, as in the underlying BGS source.
Which country produces the least coal?
Among the countries with 2023 data, Ethiopia recorded the smallest output at 2,700 tonnes. Spain has produced no coal since 2019.
Why does the table cover 2018–2023?
The table covers the latest six years with available country-level data; the source reports national coal production from 2002 onwards.
