Cocoa Butter, Fat and Oil Consumption by Country

Germany recorded the highest cocoa butter, fat and oil food supply in 2023, at 237,949 tonnes, narrowly ahead of the United States at 231,954 tonnes. Germany accounted for approximately 14.2 percent of the 1.67 million tonnes reported across 151 countries with available data. Indonesia ranked third at 192,226 tonnes. On a per-person basis, Switzerland ranked first at 13.54 grams per day, followed by Germany at 7.71 grams. These FAO figures measure food available for human consumption, not actual individual intake.

Italy placed fourth at 100,844 tonnes, with Brazil fifth at 90,374 and the United Kingdom sixth at 75,906. Poland, Türkiye, Canada and Spain closed the top ten between 45,263 and 75,000 tonnes. The top three held 39.6 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 51.0 percent. Germany had the highest listed food supply, while Switzerland had the highest per-capita food supply.

• United States supply falls by 31,093 tonnes, down 11.8 percent, surrendering first place.
• Indonesia supply grows by 30,056 tonnes, up 18.5 percent, closing on second.
• Türkiye supply grows by 13,173 tonnes, up 23.2 percent, the best rate in the top ten.
• Ivory Coast supply grows by 10,555 tonnes, up 37.4 percent.

How Cocoa Butter Supply Changed in 2023

Germany held its ground while the United States lost 31,093 tonnes, down 11.8 percent. Indonesia added 30,056 tonnes, up 18.5 percent. Türkiye added 13,173 tonnes, up 23.2 percent. Brazil added 11,337 tonnes, up 14.3 percent. Ivory Coast added 10,555 tonnes, up 37.4 percent. Poland added 10,000 tonnes, up 15.4 percent. The United Kingdom shed 9,094 tonnes, down 10.7 percent. Canada gave up 7,261 tonnes, down 9.9 percent. The 151 countries present in both years rose from 1,642,311 tonnes to 1,672,086 tonnes, up 29,775 tonnes, or 1.8 percent, with one departure holding 87 tonnes and no arrivals.

Five-Year Changes in Reported Supply

Between 2019 and 2023, the 133 countries present in both years grew from 1,512,636 tonnes to 1,608,721 tonnes, up 96,085 tonnes, or 6.4 percent. Ivory Coast added 33,801 tonnes from 5,000, accounting for 35.2 percent of the net gain. Italy added 20,844 tonnes, up 26.1 percent. Türkiye added 16,782 tonnes, up 31.6 percent. Brazil added 13,092 tonnes, up 16.9 percent. Russia lost 21,958 tonnes, down 57.8 percent. Indonesia gave up 16,087 tonnes, down 7.7 percent. The United Kingdom shed 15,894 tonnes, down 17.3 percent. Colombia fell 13,694 tonnes, down 46.6 percent. Two countries left with 633 tonnes, against 18 arrivals with 63,365.

Switzerland Leads per Person

Switzerland's 13.54 grams a day topped the per-person table, ahead of Germany at 7.71 and Iceland at 6.15. Poland followed at 5.30 grams and Italy at 4.64. Canada, Belgium, Ireland, Serbia and Ivory Coast followed below 4.6 grams. Switzerland's figure stood at about 1.8 times Germany's.

Cocoa butter, fat and oil for human consumption are recorded in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. The top two sit 5,995 tonnes apart on a 1.67-million-tonne table.

Ivory Coast's 676.0 percent five-year rate divides by 5,000 tonnes. The 63,365 arrival tonnes explain most of the gap between the common-country total and the headline.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts post tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for cocoa butter across 2019-2023. Percentages use the earlier year as the base, and no percentage is stated from a zero base. The dataset contains 154 countries after aggregates are removed, 151 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total of 1,672,086 tonnes is the sum of every country with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.
