Cocoa Consumption by Country
In 2023, no reporter owned cocoa: the United States led with 839 thousand tonnes, 16.2 percent of a 5,179-thousand-tonne total spread across 176 reporters, and tenth place sat just 717 thousand tonnes behind first. Ivory Coast recorded the highest per-capita figure at 8.65 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.
This spread-out table hides a concentration of its own: Ivory Coast sits fifth by total at 269 thousand tonnes and first per capita at 8.65 kilograms. France and the United Kingdom also appear on both top-ten lists; almost everyone else trades places. Two facts define this table and they pull in opposite directions. First, nobody dominates: the leader holds 16.2 percent and tenth place sits 717 thousand tonnes behind. Second, Ivory Coast breaks the pattern by ranking high twice, fifth by total and first per capita, while every other reporter picks one list or the other. The short window fell 117 thousand tonnes on American and French declines outweighing Indonesian and Ivorian gains. The long window rose 233 thousand tonnes on Ivory Coast and Indonesia against American and German falls. Same reporters, same product, opposite verdicts two years apart. Fourth and fifth deserve a closer look than usual: the United Kingdom at 270 thousand tonnes and Ivory Coast at 269, separated by a single thousand tonne. Above them the United States at 839, Indonesia at 486 and Brazil at 273 form a top three that holds less than a third of the table. Below fifth the ranking compresses further. France at 268 thousand tonnes sits one below Ivory Coast, and the gap from sixth to tenth spans barely a hundred thousand tonnes. More than forty percent of the listed total sits outside the top ten entirely. Among the 176 reporters present in both 2022 and 2023, listed supply slipped from 5,296 thousand tonnes to 5,179 thousand tonnes. The United States fell 146 thousand tonnes (down 14.8 percent) and France 42 (down 13.5 percent), while Indonesia added 43 (up 9.7 percent) and Ivory Coast 26 (up 10.7 percent). Belgium's jump from 2 to 24 thousand tonnes reads 1,100.0 percent and moves 22. The year's story is contraction at the top with small offsets below. For the 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 4,946 thousand tonnes to 5,179 thousand tonnes, a gain of 233 thousand tonnes (4.7 percent). The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 5 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. The growth came from the middle of the table, not the top. Ivory Coast added 101 thousand tonnes (up 60.1 percent), Indonesia 90 (up 22.7 percent), China 33, the United Kingdom 28 and India 23, while the United States fell 67 (down 7.4 percent), Germany 54 (down 47.4 percent) and Mexico 25 (down 58.1 percent). Together Ivory Coast and Indonesia account for more than four-fifths of the net increase. Per capita, Ivory Coast's 8.65 kilograms from 269 thousand tonnes lead Luxembourg at 5.42 kilograms, while the United States, first by total, records 2.44 kilograms. For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Cocoa beans and products recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of cocoa people actually ate. Other sweets and confectionery recorded under separate items sit outside this figure. The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population. In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, the United States had the largest listed food supply of cocoa among the 176 reporters with reported values, at 839 thousand tonnes. Indonesia ranked second at 486 thousand tonnes, while Brazil ranked third at 273 thousand tonnes. Ivory Coast had the highest per-capita cocoa food supply at 8.65 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of cocoa actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Cocoa beans and products from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 5,179 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.Cocoa Food Supply at a Glance

Cocoa Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Which reporter sits on both top-ten lists at once?
Ivory Coast ranked fifth by total at 269 thousand tonnes and first per capita at 8.65 kilograms per person in 2023. France and the United Kingdom are the only other reporters in both top tens.
What moved 22 thousand tonnes in Belgium in one year?
Belgium rose from 2 thousand tonnes in 2022 to 24 thousand tonnes in 2023, an increase of 22 thousand tonnes (up 1,100.0 percent). The FAO Food Balances data show the movement but do not establish its cause.
Is the food supply of cocoa the same as cocoa eaten?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
Data Disclaimer: Projected data (future years) are estimates based on mathematical models. Actual values may differ. Learn about our methodology →
