Key Takeaways

In 2023, India led listed coconuts food supply at 9,435 thousand tonnes, with Indonesia second at 4,053 thousand tonnes and Brazil third at 2,558 thousand tonnes. China followed at 1,354 thousand tonnes and Sri Lanka at 1,126 thousand tonnes. Kiribati's 281.95 kilograms per person per year lead the per-capita ranking, followed by Micronesia at 239.91 kilograms.

Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 172 reporters with data in both years rose from 24,858 thousand tonnes to 25,524 thousand tonnes, a gain of 666 thousand tonnes (2.7 percent), as India's 713-thousand-tonne rebound outweighed declines in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Thailand. Since 2019, the common-reporter total has grown 3.3 percent, with China, Indonesia and Brazil adding a combined 1,334 thousand tonnes against Thailand's 397-thousand-tonne collapse. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of coconuts actually eaten.

Coconuts Consumption by Country in 2023

India holds 9,435 thousand tonnes, or 37.0 percent of the 25,524-thousand-tonne listed total. Indonesia follows at 4,053 thousand tonnes (15.9 percent) and Brazil at 2,558 thousand tonnes (10.0 percent), with China fourth at 1,354 thousand tonnes and Sri Lanka fifth at 1,126 thousand tonnes.

The top three reporters account for 62.9 percent of the listed total, while the top five account for 72.6 percent and the top ten account for 86.1 percent. The per-capita top ten is dominated by Pacific island countries and territories, with Comoros and Sri Lanka also appearing among the leaders, far from the volume rankings.

India Rebounds 713 Thousand Tonnes as Supply Grows 2.7 Percent Between 2022 and 2023

Among the 172 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 24,858 thousand tonnes to 25,524 thousand tonnes, a gain of 666 thousand tonnes (2.7 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 172 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. India added 713 thousand tonnes (up 8.2 percent), the Philippines added 189 thousand tonnes (up 25.3 percent), China added 154 thousand tonnes (up 12.8 percent) and Brazil added 116 thousand tonnes (up 4.8 percent), while Indonesia fell 139 thousand tonnes (down 3.3 percent), Sri Lanka fell 120 thousand tonnes (down 9.6 percent), Vietnam fell 114 thousand tonnes (down 28.9 percent) and Thailand fell 104 thousand tonnes (down 70.7 percent).

China, Indonesia and Brazil Offset Thailand's 90.2 Percent Decline Since 2019

For the 172 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 24,710 thousand tonnes to 25,524 thousand tonnes, a gain of 814 thousand tonnes (3.3 percent). The 2019 total includes 173 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 172; Cuba, with 37 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. China added 498 thousand tonnes (up 58.2 percent), Indonesia added 422 thousand tonnes (up 11.6 percent), Brazil added 414 thousand tonnes (up 19.3 percent), the Philippines added 137 thousand tonnes (up 17.1 percent) and the Dominican Republic added 126 thousand tonnes (up 40.3 percent), while Thailand fell 397 thousand tonnes (down 90.2 percent), Sri Lanka fell 242 thousand tonnes (down 17.7 percent) and Myanmar fell 156 thousand tonnes (down 12.5 percent).

Thailand's fall from 440 to 43 thousand tonnes is the sharpest five-year decline in the table, offsetting about 30 percent of the combined 1,334-thousand-tonne gain from China, Indonesia and Brazil. Per capita, Kiribati's 281.95 kilograms from 37 thousand tonnes lead Micronesia at 239.91 kilograms, while India, first by total, records 6.56 kilograms.

What Does Coconuts Consumption Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the coconuts figure used here covers coconuts including copra recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year, rather than a direct estimate of how much coconuts people actually consumed. Coconuts processed for oil or other non-food uses are recorded elsewhere and sit outside this figure.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Quick Answer

In 2023, India had the largest listed coconuts food supply among the 172 reporters with reported values, at 9,435 thousand tonnes. Indonesia ranked second at 4,053 thousand tonnes, while Brazil ranked third at 2,558 thousand tonnes. Kiribati had the highest per-capita coconuts food supply at 281.95 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of coconuts actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Coconuts incl. Copra from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the quantity actually eaten, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer.

The reporter universe contains 173 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 25,524 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 172 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Kiribati lead coconuts food supply per person?

Kiribati recorded 281.95 kilograms per person in 2023 from a listed food supply of 37 thousand tonnes. Its high per-capita figure results from dividing that food supply by a relatively small population and does not mean that the average person actually ate 281.95 kilograms of coconuts.

Why did Thailand's coconuts food supply collapse since 2019?

The FAO Food Balances data show that Thailand's listed food supply fell from 440 thousand tonnes in 2019 to 43 thousand tonnes in 2023, but this dataset alone does not establish the cause of the decline. The 397-thousand-tonne decrease was the largest five-year fall in the table.

Is coconuts food supply the same as coconuts eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
