Coconuts, Desiccated Consumption by Country

China held 84,496 tonnes of desiccated coconut supply in 2023, 17.9 percent of the 472,678-tonne total. The Dominican Republic came second and the United States third. Per person, Kiribati led the table, far above the volume leaders. The Philippines returned from a zero 2022 to fourth place. All figures count food available for human consumption, not actual intake.

The Philippines placed fourth and Papua New Guinea fifth at 20,082, with Indonesia sixth (19,062), Ghana seventh (16,035) and Türkiye eighth (14,132). India (12,871) and the United Kingdom (12,444) completed the top ten. The top three held 33.2 percent of the total, and China stood 2.16 times the Dominican Republic. Per person, Tonga and the Dominican Republic followed Kiribati, with Saint Lucia at 7.96.

How Desiccated Coconut Supply Is Distributed

The Latest Swing in Desiccated Coconuts

Across the 166 countries with values in both 2022 and 2023, supply rose 4.4 percent from 452,553 tonnes, a gain of 20,125 tonnes. The Philippines' 30,771-tonne entry led the rise, while Indonesia shed 18,823 tonnes and China added 17,397. The United States fell 14,473 tonnes and Vietnam 6,665. One country left with nothing reported.

The Longer Rise and Fall of Desiccated Coconuts

Among the 159 countries reporting in both 2019 and 2023, the total climbed 7.1 percent from 441,223 tonnes, a gain of 31,434 tonnes. China added 39,836 tonnes, more than the net rise, while Papua New Guinea's 22,450-tonne fall offset part of it. The Philippines added 20,963 tonnes and the Dominican Republic 15,227. The Netherlands shed 10,026 tonnes and Ghana added 7,632. Two countries left with 7,490 tonnes between them while seven entered with 20.

The Per-Person Order of Desiccated Coconuts

Kiribati's 57.88 grams a day led the per-person table, ahead of Tonga at 9.95 and the Dominican Republic at 9.45. Saint Lucia (7.96) and French Polynesia (7.23) followed, with Marshall Islands sixth at 4.44 and Samoa seventh at 3.7. China, first by volume, managed only 0.16 grams, while the Philippines stood at 0.73. The Dominican Republic, second by volume, was the only other volume top-ten country in the per-person top five.

Where Desiccated Coconuts Swung Most

Ghana's path ran from 871.40 tonnes in 2022 to 16,035 in 2023, the sharpest percentage rise in the latest year. Indonesia moved the other way, from 37,885 tonnes to 19,062. Iraq added 5,088 tonnes over five years. China, by contrast, climbed steadily from 44,660 tonnes in 2019.

Desiccated Coconut Consumption by Country: Key Findings

China had the largest reported desiccated coconut food supply in 2023 at 84,496 tonnes, followed by the Dominican Republic at 39,085 tonnes and the United States at 33,267 tonnes. These three countries accounted for 33.2 percent of the 472,678 tonnes reported across countries with a 2023 value.

Kiribati had the highest per-person supply at 57.88 grams per person per day, well ahead of Tonga at 9.95 grams and the Dominican Republic at 9.45 grams. China ranked first by total volume but recorded only 0.16 grams per person per day.

Desiccated coconut supply increased 4.4 percent from 452,553 tonnes in 2022. The Philippines recorded the largest latest-year increase, moving from zero reported tonnes in 2022 to 30,771 tonnes in 2023. Ghana also rose sharply, from 871.40 tonnes.
