Coconuts, in Shell Consumption by Country

India held 9,383,926 tonnes of in-shell coconut supply in 2023, 40.6 percent of the 23,101,085-tonne total. Indonesia came second and Brazil third. Per person, Micronesia led, while India managed 17.88. Thailand's five-year fall and Brazil's steady climb shaped the period. All figures count food available for human consumption, not actual intake.

Coconut Consumption by Country: Key Findings

India had the largest reported in-shell coconut food supply in 2023 at 9,383,926 tonnes, followed by Indonesia at 3,957,880 tonnes and Brazil at 2,500,492 tonnes. Together, these three countries accounted for 68.6 percent of the 23,101,085 tonnes reported across countries with a 2023 value.

Micronesia had the highest per-person coconut supply at 656.77 grams per person per day, followed by Vanuatu at 517.87 grams and the Marshall Islands at 499.97 grams. India ranked first by total volume but recorded 17.88 grams per person per day.

Between 2019 and 2023, Brazil recorded the largest increase in coconut supply, adding 433,192 tonnes, while Thailand recorded the largest decline, falling by 397,000 tonnes. These figures represent food available for human consumption rather than the amount actually eaten.

Sri Lanka placed fourth at 1,105,428 tonnes and Myanmar fifth at 1,093,312, with China sixth (931,366), the Philippines seventh (744,621) and Papua New Guinea eighth (584,301). Tanzania (299,923) and Vietnam (275,364) completed the top ten. The top three held 68.6 percent of the total, and India stood 2.37 times Indonesia. Per person, Vanuatu and the Marshall Islands followed Micronesia, with Kiribati at 386.57.

Coconuts: Scale Against Intensity

• India's 2023 supply exceeded Indonesia's by 5,426,046 tonnes.
• Thailand fell 90.2 percent over five years, from 440,000 tonnes to 43,000.
• Micronesia's 27,000 tonnes made it the per-person leader.
• The second-largest five-year gain belonged to Brazil at 433,192 tonnes.

The Most Recent Coconuts Year

Across the 171 countries with values in both 2022 and 2023, supply rose 2.4 percent from 22,551,180 tonnes, a gain of 549,905 tonnes. India added 682,964 tonnes (7.8 percent up) while Sri Lanka shed 125,573 (10.2 percent down). Brazil added 109,650 tonnes and Thailand lost 103,609. One country left with nothing reported.

The Longer Climb and Fall of Coconuts

Among the 167 countries reporting in both 2019 and 2023, the total climbed 2.8 percent from 22,481,677 tonnes, a gain of 618,323 tonnes. Brazil added 433,192 tonnes, accounting for 70.1 percent of that net rise, while Indonesia added 411,434 tonnes. Thailand's 397,000-tonne fall offset 64.2 percent, with China up 298,556 tonnes and Sri Lanka down 232,845. Four countries entered with 1,085 tonnes between them.

The Per-Person Peaks of Coconuts

Micronesia's 656.77 grams a day led the per-person table, ahead of Vanuatu at 517.87 and the Marshall Islands at 499.97. Kiribati (386.57) and Tuvalu (351.93) followed, with Nauru sixth at 315.85 and Comoros seventh at 247.85. Papua New Guinea (154.08), Sri Lanka (131.84) and the Solomon Islands (129.27) came next. India, first by a wide margin on volume, sat far down the per-person table at 17.88 grams, while Indonesia managed 38.56.

Coconuts: The Thailand Fall

Thailand's supply fell from 440,000 tonnes in 2019 to 43,000 in 2023, with the sharpest drop between 2021 and 2022. Malaysia moved the same way on a smaller scale, from 229,026 tonnes in 2019 to 160,000. Brazil, by contrast, climbed every year from 2,067,300 to 2,500,492.

For coconuts in shell, tonnage follows element 5141 and daily grams follow element 665 across 2019 to 2023. A change is measured from the earlier year; none is stated from a zero base. Only countries present in both compared years enter a change. A reported zero is not a blank, and blanks never stand in for zeros. The file holds 172 countries after removing World, regional and aggregate rows; 171 of them carry 2023 values. The numbers describe food available for human consumption.
