Coffee Consumption by Country
In 2023, the largest coffee table on record here belonged to the United States at just 1,431 thousand tonnes, 12.4 percent of an 11,576-thousand-tonne total no reporter dominates. Brazil sat second at 1,061 thousand tonnes after nearly tripling since 2019, while Hong Kong recorded the highest per-capita figure at 43.23 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.
The gap between first and eighth is barely a thousand tonnes: the United States at 1,431, Brazil at 1,061, the Philippines at 489, Germany at 449, Vietnam at 387, Italy at 363, France at 346 and the United Kingdom at 343. Hong Kong's 43.23 kilograms per person per year top the per-capita side from 322 thousand tonnes, a ranking where producing countries barely register. Rank four through eight by total and the numbers blur: Germany 449, Vietnam 387, Italy 363, France 346, the United Kingdom 343. Five reporters, 106 thousand tonnes apart, none of them producing a bean worth naming next to Brazil. The per-capita table inverts everything again, led by Hong Kong at 43.23 kilograms from 322 thousand tonnes. Brazil's arc dominates both windows, up 588 thousand tonnes on the year and 696 since 2019, worth 55.8 percent of the five-year net increase. Around it the table churns: Hong Kong tripled on the year, Vietnam multiplied thirty-fold since 2019, Russia lost two-thirds. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of coffee actually eaten. Start at fourth place, because the top three already had their paragraph. Germany at 449 thousand tonnes leads a queue that runs through Vietnam (387), Italy (363), France (346) and the United Kingdom (343) down to Hong Kong at 322 and China at 300. Seven reporters, 149 thousand tonnes apart, and every one of them would need to more than double to catch Brazil. The top ten together hold 47.4 percent, leaving most of the coffee outside the ranking entirely. Among the 175 reporters present in both 2022 and 2023, listed supply inched from 11,376 thousand tonnes to 11,576. Brazil added 588 thousand tonnes (up 124.3 percent) and Hong Kong 217 (up 206.7 percent), while the United States fell 282 (down 16.5 percent), Russia 211, Germany 138 and Belarus 76. Ethiopia added 101 thousand tonnes and Mexico 59 against the grain. For the 175 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 10,328 thousand tonnes to 11,576 thousand tonnes, a gain of 1,248 thousand tonnes (12.1 percent). The 2019 total includes 176 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 175; Cuba, with 10 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. Brazil added 696 thousand tonnes (up 190.7 percent), Vietnam 374 (up 2,876.9 percent from 13 thousand tonnes), Hong Kong 230, China 134 and Guinea 116, while Russia fell 369 (down 66.5 percent), the Philippines 206 and the United States 147. Take out Brazil and Vietnam and the five-year growth nearly vanishes: their combined 1,070 thousand tonnes against a net 1,248. Per capita, Hong Kong's 43.23 kilograms from 322 thousand tonnes lead the Marshall Islands at 23.26 kilograms, while the United States, first by total, records 4.17 kilograms. For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Coffee and products recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of coffee people actually drank. Other beverages recorded under separate items sit outside this figure. The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population. In 2023, the United States had the largest listed coffee food supply among the 175 reporters with reported values, at 1,431 thousand tonnes. Brazil ranked second at 1,061 thousand tonnes, while the Philippines ranked third at 489 thousand tonnes. Hong Kong had the highest per-capita coffee food supply at 43.23 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures describe food available for human consumption and should not be interpreted as the amount of coffee actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Coffee and products from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The reporter universe for this item contains 176 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 11,576 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 175 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.Coffee Food Supply at a Glance

Coffee Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if Brazil is removed from the five-year maths?
Without Brazil's 696-thousand-tonne gain, the net increase would shrink from 1,248 thousand tonnes to 552. Vietnam's 374 thousand tonnes would then be the largest remaining gain, followed by Hong Kong at 230 thousand tonnes.
How did Hong Kong reach second place in 2023?
Hong Kong rose from 105 thousand tonnes in 2022 to 322 thousand tonnes in 2023, an increase of 217 thousand tonnes (up 206.7 percent). The FAO Food Balances data show the movement but do not establish its cause.
Is the food supply of coffee the same as coffee actually drunk?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually drank, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
Data Disclaimer: Projected data (future years) are estimates based on mathematical models. Actual values may differ. Learn about our methodology →
