Coffee Substitutes Consumption by Country

Ivory Coast had the highest reported coffee-substitute food supply in 2023, at 13,448 tonnes, representing 16.7 percent of the 80,381-tonne total across reporting countries. Ireland ranked first per person, at 1.54 grams per day. These FAOSTAT figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually consumed.

Ethiopia placed second at 10,282 tonnes, with Taiwan third at 7,093 and South Korea fourth at 4,906. Belgium, the Netherlands, Lebanon and Ireland closed the top ten between 2,922 and 4,570 tonnes. The top three held 38.3 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 50.1 percent. Ivory Coast had the highest listed food supply, while Ireland had the highest per-capita food supply.

• Ivorian substitutes climb: up 6,040 tonnes, or 81.5 percent, the biggest latest-year gain.
• Korean substitutes halve: down 4,176 tonnes, or 46.0 percent, slipping to fourth.
• Belgian substitutes add 3,508 tonnes from 1,062, one of the largest absolute gains.
• Ethiopian substitutes grow: up 3,117 tonnes, or 43.5 percent, firming second place.

Ivory Coast Leads Coffee Substitutes in 2023

Ivory Coast added 6,040 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, up 81.5 percent to 13,448 tonnes. Belgium added 3,508 tonnes from 1,062. Ethiopia added 3,117 tonnes, up 43.5 percent. Indonesia added 1,714 tonnes from a small base. Slovakia added 1,148 tonnes from almost nothing. South Korea lost 4,176 tonnes, down 46.0 percent. Rwanda shed 3,022 tonnes, down 67.6 percent. The Netherlands gave up 1,162 tonnes, down 26.0 percent. The 143 countries present in both years rose from 73,437 tonnes to 80,378 tonnes, up 6,941 tonnes, or 9.5 percent, with one arrival carrying 3 tonnes.

Reported Supply Falls Sharply Over Five Years

Between 2019 and 2023, the 134 countries present in both years fell from 501,584 tonnes to 79,169 tonnes, down 422,415 tonnes, or 84.2 percent. Pakistan lost 410,084 tonnes, down 100.0 percent, accounting for 97.1 percent of the net fall. Indonesia lost 19,257 tonnes, down 88.0 percent. Saudi Arabia shed 9,946 tonnes, down 80.0 percent. The United Kingdom fell 1,701 tonnes, down 48.7 percent. Ethiopia added 10,203 tonnes from 79. Belgium added 4,520 tonnes from 50. Ivory Coast added 4,931 tonnes, up 57.9 percent. Rwanda added 1,450 tonnes from a zero base. Four countries left with 33 tonnes, against ten arrivals with 1,212.

Ireland Leads Coffee Substitutes per Person

Ireland's 1.54 grams a day edged Lebanon's 1.45, with Fiji third at 1.43 and the Bahamas fourth at 1.33. Ivory Coast sat fifth at 1.18 grams, with Slovenia at 1.15 and Belgium at 1.07. Timor-Leste, Namibia and Tonga followed below 1.1 grams. Ivory Coast pairs first-place tonnage with fifth-place daily intensity. Pakistan reported zero in both measures in 2023.

What the Coffee Substitutes Data Covers

Coffee substitutes for human consumption are recorded in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. Pakistan's reported decline to zero removed about four-fifths of the 2019 total, so the two windows describe very different rankings.

Ethiopia's 12,835.0 percent five-year rate divides by 79 tonnes and Belgium's 9,100.7 percent by 50 tonnes. Slovakia's 4,035.0 percent latest rate divides by 28.44 tonnes the same way. Rwanda's arrival carries no percentage, as zero bases allow none. The Pakistan figures above stand as the file's single large-value reported zero.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts catalogue tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for coffee substitutes across 2019-2023. Percentages consult the earlier year, and zero bases consult none. The dataset spans 148 countries after aggregates are removed, 144 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total of 80,381 tonnes is the sum of the 144 countries with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals. Per-capita figures are rounded separately from tonnage, so a displayed value of 0.00 grams does not necessarily mean that the underlying food supply was zero.
