Coffee, Decaffeinated or Roasted Consumption by Country

The United States had by far the largest listed supply of decaffeinated or roasted coffee in 2023, at 1,009,497 tonnes, 30.4 percent of the listed total. Germany followed at 290,093 tonnes and Italy at 238,774, while Luxembourg recorded the highest food supply per person at 38.09 grams a day. The 2023 figures total 3,325,182 tonnes across 171 countries, 169 with values, covering food available for human consumption from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023.

Matched countries fell 8.4 percent in the latest year and 5.7 percent between 2019 and 2023. The United States and Germany drove the latest decline, while Guinea and China rose over the five-year period.

France placed fourth at 235,654 tonnes, with Spain fifth at 114,623 and the United Kingdom sixth at 109,543. Canada, China, Sweden and Poland closed the top ten between 61,053 and 83,498 tonnes. The top three held 46.3 percent of the annual listed consumption total, and the top five 56.8 percent.

• The United States falls: down 131,459 tonnes, or 11.5 percent, the deepest latest-year loss.
• Germany falls: down 103,077 tonnes, or 26.2 percent, the second-deepest latest-year loss.
• Mexico grows: up 25,147 tonnes, or 70.8 percent, the largest absolute gain.
• China grows: up 13,335 tonnes, or 25.1 percent, rising against the broader decline.

The United States and Germany Drive the Latest Decline

The United States lost 131,459 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 11.5 percent to 1,009,497 tonnes. Germany lost 103,077 tonnes, down 26.2 percent. Italy gave up 20,531 tonnes, down 7.9 percent. Belgium shed 18,394 tonnes, down 28.5 percent. Guinea lost 15,387 tonnes, down 20.7 percent. The United Kingdom fell 9,640 tonnes, down 8.1 percent. Mexico added 25,147 tonnes, up 70.8 percent. China added 13,335 tonnes, up 25.1 percent. The 169 countries present in both years fell from 3,628,669 tonnes to 3,325,182 tonnes, down 303,487 tonnes, or 8.4 percent, with one departure holding 9 tonnes and no arrivals.

Guinea and China Buck the Five-Year Decline

Between 2019 and 2023, the 167 countries present in both years declined from 3,527,291 tonnes to 3,324,976 tonnes, down 202,315 tonnes, or 5.7 percent. The United States lost 173,908 tonnes, down 14.7 percent, accounting for 86.0 percent of the net fall. Germany lost 58,219 tonnes, down 16.7 percent. France shed 30,183 tonnes, down 11.4 percent. Finland gave up 20,866 tonnes, down 33.5 percent. Spain fell 17,407 tonnes, down 13.2 percent. The United Kingdom lost 14,221 tonnes. Guinea added 50,758 tonnes from 8,011. China added 31,423 tonnes, up 89.5 percent. One country left with 4 tonnes, against two arrivals with 206.

Luxembourg Leads Coffee Supply per Person

Luxembourg's 38.09 grams a day nearly doubled Finland's 20.23 in second. Sweden sat third at 16.57 grams, with Norway at 15.40 and Iceland at 15.15. Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark and Croatia followed below 13 grams. The United States, first by volume, missed the per-person top ten. Small northern states lead per person; big markets lead by total volume.

What the Coffee, Decaffeinated or Roasted Data Covers

Several large European markets recorded lower reported supply than five years earlier, while Guinea and China moved higher. Tonnage shows the size of each country's reported supply, while the per-person measure adjusts the figure for population.

Guinea's 633.6 percent five-year increase is driven by its relatively small 2019 base of 8,011 tonnes. Mexico's 70.8 percent latest rate starts near 35,000 tonnes and means a genuine step up.

Data interpretation: These figures represent decaffeinated or roasted coffee available for human consumption, not the amount people actually drank. FAO reports the supply in tonnes and grams per person per day for reporting countries. The 2023 map ranks countries by total tonnes, while the paired per-person measure adjusts the reported supply for population size.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts sort tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for decaffeinated or roasted coffee across 2019-2023. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base; no percentage is calculated when that base is zero. The universe counts 171 countries minus aggregates, 169 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total of 3,325,182 tonnes is the sum of every country with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.
