Coffee, Green Consumption by Country

Green coffee is having a boom year: Brazil held 881,375 tonnes, 30.0 percent of the listed consumption total. Ethiopia followed at 289,854 tonnes and Vietnam at 287,099, while Laos led per person at 55.21 grams a day. The 2023 figures total 2,936,609 tonnes across 133 countries, 132 with values, covering food available for human consumption from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023.

Brazil tops Coffee, Green consumption in 2023, 591,521 tonnes ahead of Ethiopia. The 2023 listed total reaches 2,936,609 tonnes. Laos leads the per-person table. Ethiopia added 99,797 tonnes (52.5 percent) in the latest year.

Laos placed fourth at 154,469 tonnes, with Peru fifth at 144,263 and Türkiye sixth at 88,983. Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia and Guinea closed the top ten between 69,142 and 77,567 tonnes. The top three held 49.7 percent of the annual listed consumption total, and the top five 59.8 percent. Brazil had the highest listed food supply at 881,375 tonnes, while Laos had the highest per-capita food supply at 55.21 grams per person.

• Brazil's listed green coffee food supply rose by 411,581 tonnes, or 87.6 percent, the largest absolute increase between 2022 and 2023.
• Ethiopia added 99,797 tonnes, or 52.5 percent, strengthening its second-place position.
• Peru added 42,333 tonnes, or 41.5 percent, to reach fifth place.
• Honduras more than tripled: its listed food supply rose by 27,338 tonnes, from 11,510 to 38,848.

Brazil's 2023 Surge Reshaped the Table

Brazil added 411,581 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, up 87.6 percent to 881,375 tonnes. Ethiopia added 99,797 tonnes, up 52.5 percent. Peru added 42,333 tonnes, up 41.5 percent. Vietnam added 35,242 tonnes, up 14.0 percent. Indonesia added 28,137 tonnes, up 56.9 percent. Honduras added 27,338 tonnes from 11,510. Russia lost 23,073 tonnes, down 25.9 percent. South Korea shed 19,565 tonnes, down 28.0 percent. The 131 countries present in both years leapt from 2,284,835 tonnes to 2,936,596 tonnes, up 651,761 tonnes, or 28.5 percent, with one arrival carrying 13 tonnes.

Vietnam Scales Five-Year Coffee, Green

Between 2019 and 2023, the 121 countries present in both years climbed from 2,056,501 tonnes to 2,874,770 tonnes, up 818,269 tonnes, or 39.8 percent. Brazil added 520,226 tonnes, up 144.0 percent, accounting for 63.6 percent of the net gain. Vietnam added 274,400 tonnes from 12,699. Ethiopia added 75,811 tonnes, up 35.4 percent. Guinea added 51,475 tonnes from 17,667. Guatemala added 36,061 tonnes from a small base. Peru added 27,526 tonnes, up 23.6 percent. Russia lost 119,238 tonnes, down 64.4 percent. Algeria shed 69,502 tonnes, down 57.6 percent. One country left with 9,890 tonnes, against 11 arrivals with 61,839.

Laos Leads Green Coffee Supply per Person

Laos' 55.21 grams a day dwarfed Guinea's 13.15 in second and Costa Rica's 12.15 in third. Peru sat fourth at 11.68 grams, with Brazil at 11.44 and Serbia at 11.11. Armenia, Honduras, Jordan and Vietnam followed below 10.1 grams. Brazil pairs first-place tonnage with fifth-place daily intensity.

Brazil combined the largest listed food supply with the fifth-highest daily amount per person. Laos ranked fourth by total tonnes but first by listed food supply per person, at 55.21 grams per person per day.

Green coffee is recorded here as food supply available for human consumption. The figures should not be interpreted as actual beverage intake, the number of cups consumed, coffee production, or roasting activity.

What the Coffee, Green Data Covers

Green coffee for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. A 28.5 percent one-year leap on a near-three-million-tonne base is the loudest short move of the batch.

Vietnam's 2,160.8 percent five-year rate divides by 12,699 tonnes, reflecting growth from a very small 2019 base. Guatemala's 701.2 percent rate starts small the same way. Honduras tripled lately from 11,510 tonnes. South Korea's 707.2 percent increase came from a relatively small 2022 base of 2,933 tonnes, so the percentage is amplified by the low starting point.

Green Coffee Consumption by Country: Key Findings

In 2023, Brazil had the largest listed food supply of green coffee at 881,375 tonnes, followed by Ethiopia at 289,854 tonnes and Vietnam at 287,099 tonnes. Laos had the highest listed food supply per person at 55.21 grams per person per day. The 2023 data covers 132 countries with reported values and totals 2,936,609 tonnes.

Across countries present at both endpoints, listed green coffee food supply increased 28.5 percent from 2022 to 2023 and 39.8 percent from 2019 to 2023. These figures represent food available for human consumption in FAO Supply Utilization Accounts, not measured beverage intake or the amount of coffee actually consumed by individuals.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts enter tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for green coffee across 2019-2023. Percentages draw on the earlier year, and zero bases draw nothing. The universe includes 133 countries after aggregates are removed, 132 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total of 2,936,609 tonnes is the sum of the 132 countries with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals. Reported zeros are retained as reported values, but sharp reversals involving zero are treated as data anomalies rather than percentage changes.
