About Tokelau
Tokelau has distinction as world's first 100% solar-powered nation using renewable energy exclusively. The territory comprises three small atolls with total land area of only 12 square kilometers. Tokelauan culture maintains traditional Polynesian customs with strong community cooperation and sustainability focus.
The atolls have tropical climate with high vulnerability to sea level rise. Tokelau has non-self-governing territory status under New Zealand administration. The territory has subsistence economy with limited cash transactions and traditional barter systems.
No official capital exists with administration rotating among three atolls annually. Tokelau has no airport or harbor requiring boat access from Samoa. The territory has Tokelauan and English as official languages with strong oral traditions.
Traditional Tokelauan culture includes communal decision-making, traditional fishing, and cultural preservation efforts. The atolls have Christian congregational majority with traditional Polynesian spiritual elements. Tokelauan cuisine features seafood, coconut, and limited agricultural products with traditional preparation methods.
The population is only 1,871 with renewable energy leadership and traditional lifestyle preservation. Tokelau offers sustainability model, Polynesian authenticity, and climate change vulnerability in remote Pacific territory.
