Russia Widens the Currants Gap

Russia added 21,176 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, rising 4.2 percent. France added 1,903 tonnes, up 21.2 percent. Poland gave up 16,377 tonnes, down 12.5 percent. Lithuania lost 1,859 tonnes, down 46.2 percent. Ukraine shed 1,646 tonnes, down 6.8 percent. The Netherlands fell 1,182 tonnes, down 18.7 percent, and Germany 943 tonnes, down 5.3 percent. The 93 countries present in both years moved from 731,391 tonnes to 733,048 tonnes, up 1,656 tonnes, or 0.2 percent, with three arrivals holding 4 tonnes.

Kuwait's Currant Supply Falls Sharply

Between 2019 and 2023, the 82 countries present in both years advanced from 626,912 tonnes to 733,002 tonnes, up 106,090 tonnes, or 16.9 percent. Russia added 108,182 tonnes, up 26.3 percent, accounting for 102.0 percent of the net gain. Germany added 2,108 tonnes, up 14.3 percent. Italy added 1,369 tonnes, up 66.2 percent, and France 1,018 tonnes, up 10.3 percent. Belgium added 1,013 tonnes, up 319.0 percent from a small base. Kuwait shed 4,182 tonnes, down 97.1 percent. Ukraine lost 3,535 tonnes, down 13.5 percent, and New Zealand 1,465 tonnes, down 24.4 percent. Nine countries left with 26 tonnes, against 14 arrivals with 50.

Russia Leads Currants per Person Too

Russia's 9.79 grams a day headed the table, with Poland second at 8.13 and New Zealand third at 2.41. Lithuania followed at 2.07 grams, with Ukraine at 1.64 and Moldova at 1.11. The Netherlands, Austria, Finland and Latvia sat below one gram. Russia led both rankings in 2023, topping the table by total food supply as well as food supply per person.

What the Currants Data Covers

Currants destined for human consumption are counted in tonnes and daily grams per person, country by country, for 2019-2023. Annual totals include reporting countries only, excluding aggregates. The tonnage ranking shows the countries with the largest reported food supply, while the per-person ranking adjusts that supply for population size. When one country accounts for more than seven-tenths of the listed supply, its figure dominates the overall ranking.

Kuwait fell 97.1 percent across five years to just 125 tonnes, leaving it far below its 2019 level. Its 2019 level had been a mid-table one, so the retreat reshaped the lower ranks.

Methodology

In FAO Supply Utilization Accounts, element 5141 means tonnage for human consumption and element 665 means daily grams per person, both tracked for currants from 2019 to 2023. Each percentage uses the earlier year as its base, and zero bases receive no percentage. The universe comprises 106 countries once aggregates go, 96 with 2023 values. Only countries present at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total is the sum of the 96 countries with a 2023 value. Reported zero is not blank, and under-1,000 values present two decimals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which country ranked second to Russia per person?

Poland ranked second to Russia per person in 2023 at 8.13 grams per day, well behind Russia at 9.79 grams, with New Zealand third at 2.41 grams.

How heavy is the top three?

Extremely heavy: Russia alone held 70.9 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top three together seized 89.7 percent of reported supply overall.

How much did Russia's currant supply increase?

Russia added 21,176 tonnes, up 4.2 percent, widening its vast gap in the latest year as Poland lost 16,377 tonnes far behind it that year.

Is this what people actually ate?

No. The figures measure food available for human consumption in the reference year, not actual intake, so eaten amounts stay below supply in every case.

What happened to Kuwait?

Kuwait alone shed 4,182 tonnes across five years, down 97.1 percent from its 2019 level of 4,307 tonnes, ending far below that level in 2023.
