Demersal Fish Consumption by Country

In 2023, China held 3,866 thousand tonnes of listed demersal fish food supply, 20.3 percent of a 19,060-thousand-tonne total spread across 168 reporters. All 168 reporters with reported 2023 quantities have the same listed quantity as in 2022, leaving the total quantity unchanged at 19,060 thousand tonnes. Per-capita food supply values, however, can differ between the two years because they are population-adjusted. The five-year window tells the story instead, with Indonesia adding 811 thousand tonnes while China fell 792 thousand tonnes. Portugal recorded the highest per-capita figure at 26.04 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.

Demersal Fish Consumption

China leads at 3,866 thousand tonnes, 2.06 times Indonesia at 1,874. Per capita the order belongs to Europe and its neighbours: Portugal at 26.04 kilograms from 272 thousand tonnes, then Norway at 20.56 and South Korea at 16.34 kilograms. China records 2.72 kilograms per person.

Demersal Fish Food Supply at a Glance

  • China had the largest listed demersal fish food supply in 2023 at 3,866 thousand tonnes.
  • Indonesia ranked second at 1,874 thousand tonnes, followed by the United States at 1,465 thousand tonnes.
  • Portugal had the highest per-capita food supply at 26.04 kilograms per person per year.
  • The listed total was 19,060 thousand tonnes across 168 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 168 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed demersal fish food supply decreased by 465 thousand tonnes, or 2.4 percent.
  • The FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Key Takeaways

The 2022-2023 comparison is unusual because all 168 reporters with reported 2023 values show identical figures in both years. The five-year window is where the table shows measurable movement: Indonesia added 811 thousand tonnes (up 76.3 percent) while China fell 792 thousand tonnes (down 17.0 percent), two opposite moves that nearly cancel each other and leave a net decline of just 465 thousand tonnes.

India fell 357 thousand tonnes (down 42.1 percent) and Nigeria 90 thousand tonnes (down 22.6 percent), while Russia added 79 thousand tonnes and Angola 55 thousand tonnes. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of demersal fish actually eaten.

Demersal Fish Consumption by Country in 2023

The 2023 table is led by China at 3,866 thousand tonnes, with Indonesia second at 1,874 and the United States third at 1,465. Russia and South Korea complete the top five at 1,252 and 846 thousand tonnes, respectively.

China holds 20.3 percent of the 19,060-thousand-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 37.8 percent of the listed total, while the top five represented 48.8 percent and the top ten 64.4 percent. Because every 2023 value repeats 2022, this ranking describes both years at once.

No Measured Change Between 2022 and 2023: Every Reporter Repeats

Among the 168 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed quantity stands at 19,060 thousand tonnes in both years, a change of zero. The same 168 reporters are present at both endpoints, and every reporter has the same quantity in both years. Per-capita values are not identical, however, because they are calculated on a population basis. The analysis below therefore focuses on the 2019 to 2023 quantity comparison, where values genuinely differ.

Indonesia Adds 811 Thousand Tonnes as China Falls 792 Thousand Tonnes Since 2019

For the 168 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply fell from 19,525 thousand tonnes to 19,060 thousand tonnes, a decline of 465 thousand tonnes (2.4 percent). The 2019 total includes 170 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 168; Bhutan and Cuba, with a combined 7 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. Indonesia added 811 thousand tonnes (up 76.3 percent), Russia added 79 thousand tonnes (up 6.7 percent) and Angola added 55 thousand tonnes (up 65.5 percent), while China fell 792 thousand tonnes (down 17.0 percent), India fell 357 thousand tonnes (down 42.1 percent), Nigeria fell 90 thousand tonnes (down 22.6 percent), Iran fell 63 thousand tonnes (down 34.6 percent) and the Philippines fell 53 thousand tonnes (down 13.0 percent).

Indonesia's gain and China's fall differ by just 19 thousand tonnes, mirroring each other across the window. Per capita, Portugal's 26.04 kilograms from 272 thousand tonnes lead Norway at 20.56 kilograms, while China, first by total, records 2.72 kilograms.

What Does the Demersal Fish Food Supply Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Demersal Fish recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of demersal fish people actually ate. Freshwater and pelagic fish recorded under separate items sit outside this figure.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Demersal Fish Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, China had the largest listed demersal fish food supply among the 168 reporters with reported values, at 3,866 thousand tonnes. Indonesia ranked second at 1,874 thousand tonnes, while the United States ranked third at 1,465 thousand tonnes. Portugal had the highest per-capita demersal fish food supply at 26.04 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of demersal fish actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Demersal Fish from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The 2022 and 2023 quantity values are identical for every reporter with reported data in both years.

The reporter universe for this item contains 170 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 19,060 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 168 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there no year-on-year change in this table?

Every reporter with a 2023 value shows the identical 2022 quantity, so the 2022 and 2023 listed quantity totals match exactly at 19,060 thousand tonnes. The dataset as published contains no measurable movement between those two years.

Which two reporters mirror each other since 2019?

Indonesia added 811 thousand tonnes (up 76.3 percent) while China fell 792 thousand tonnes (down 17.0 percent) between 2019 and 2023. The two opposite moves differ by just 19 thousand tonnes against a net decline of 465 thousand tonnes.

Is the food supply of demersal fish the same as fish eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
