Dry Cow Peas Consumption by Country
Nigeria's 2,684,458 tonnes top listed dry-cow-peas supply in 2023 at 47.7 percent of 5,625,457 tonnes across 107 reporters, with Niger second at 1,276,301. The latest year added 4.7 percent as Niger gained 266,751 tonnes and Nigeria 184,458 against Kenya's halving to 157,523. Five years added 19.4 percent with Nigeria behind 58.1 percent of the net gain. Niger tops per person at 133.67 grams a day.
Nigeria's 2023 dry-cow-peas total of 2,684,458 tonnes beat Niger's 1,276,301 by 2.10 times, with Burkina Faso third at 691,874. Niger's 133.67 grams a day topped the per-person list, ahead of Burkina Faso at 82.32 and Nigeria at 32.27. Nigeria opens the 2023 table at 2,684,458 tonnes (47.7 percent of 5,625,457), Niger at 1,276,301 and Burkina Faso at 691,874. Kenya and Cameroon follow at 157,523 and 156,275 tonnes. The top three hold 82.7 percent, the top five 88.3 percent and the top ten 95.0 percent. Niger's per-person figure of 133.67 grams a day comes from second place by volume, with Burkina Faso at 82.32 and Nigeria at 32.27 behind. The 90 reporters present in both 2019 and 2023 moved from 4,702,637 tonnes to 5,613,372 — up 910,735 tonnes, or 19.4 percent. Two reporters with zero 2019 values left while seventeen entered with 12,085 tonnes between them, led by Zambia at 5,444 tonnes. Nigeria added 528,813 tonnes (up 24.5 percent), 58.1 percent of the net increase, with Niger adding 327,977 (up 34.6 percent); Tanzania added 43,380 (up 61.9 percent), Kenya 41,394 (up 35.6 percent) and Yemen 27,000 (up 71.1 percent), with Burkina Faso adding 20,874 (up 3.1 percent), while Myanmar fell 60,451 (down 54.1 percent) and India 44,469 (down 63.5 percent). The 107 reporters present in both 2022 and 2023 moved from 5,375,375 tonnes to 5,625,457 — up 250,082 tonnes, or 4.7 percent, with none entering or leaving. Niger added 266,751 tonnes (up 26.4 percent) and Nigeria 184,458 (up 7.4 percent), while Kenya fell 157,273 (down 50.0 percent); Burkina Faso fell 28,126 (down 3.9 percent) and Myanmar 13,614 (down 20.9 percent), with China falling 8,027 (down 23.1 percent) and Cameroon 6,899 (down 4.2 percent), while Madagascar added 5,879 (up 252.0 percent). Dry cow peas form their own FAO item here — counted apart from fellow pulses, which are never folded into these figures. The numbers capture food available for human consumption in the reference year; per-day grams divide the same supply by population. Nigeria's 2,684,458 tonnes beat Niger's 1,276,301 for the largest 2023 listed dry-cow-peas supply — 47.7 percent of 5,625,457 tonnes across 107 reporters. Burkina Faso came third at 691,874 tonnes. Niger's 133.67 grams a day topped the per-person list. What is counted is food available for human consumption, not cow peas actually eaten. Every percentage here divides by the earlier endpoint year, across reporters holding values in both years. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts supply the tonnes (element 5141, food supply quantity) and the daily grams per person (element 665) — for cow peas, dry, 2019 through 2023. Supply available for human consumption in the reference year is what gets counted, not intake. Zero-base years yield no percentage; a zero reports zero and a blank reports nothing. The tables admit reporters only — 112 of them held a value in at least one year from 2019 through 2023 — with World, regional and China (aggregate) rows left out; China is the China reporter. Tonnes stand as FAO published them, unrounded, and the 2023 listed total of 5,625,457 tonnes adds the 107 reporters with a 2023 value. Frequently Asked Questions
What decided the latest year?
Niger added 266,751 tonnes and Nigeria 184,458 in 2022-2023 against Kenya's 157,273-tonne halving — leaving a 250,082-tonne net increase. Each move is in the figures; their causes are not.
How did Nigeria and Niger split five years?
Nigeria added 528,813 tonnes and Niger 327,977 in 2019-2023 — 58.1 and 36.0 percent of the 910,735-tonne net gain. The balance of smaller moves fills the rest.
Why is Niger first per person from second place?
Niger's 1,276,301 tonnes read as 133.67 grams a day per person, the highest shown. The two rankings divide the same supply two ways: by reporters, and by population.
