Peas Consumption by Country
FAO Food Balances data record 5,612 thousand tonnes of listed peas food supply in 2023 across 155 reporters with reported values. China accounts for 1,201 thousand tonnes of that total, just ahead of India at 995 thousand tonnes, with Ethiopia third at 469 thousand tonnes. Norway records the highest per-capita food supply at 12.68 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values in individual years.
China leads the 2023 ranking at 1,201 thousand tonnes, only 1.21 times India's 995 thousand tonnes, a narrow lead at the top of the table. Norway tops the per-capita ranking at 12.68 kilograms per person per year from 70 thousand tonnes. In 2023, China led listed peas food supply at 1,201 thousand tonnes, with India second at 995 thousand tonnes and Ethiopia third at 469 thousand tonnes. Bangladesh followed at 251 thousand tonnes and the United States at 241 thousand tonnes. Norway's 12.68 kilograms per person per year lead the per-capita ranking, followed by Estonia at 10.35 kilograms. Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 155 reporters with data in both years rose from 5,370 thousand tonnes to 5,612 thousand tonnes, a gain of 242 thousand tonnes (4.5 percent), as China and India rebounded by a combined 494 thousand tonnes. Since 2019, the common-reporter total has fallen 2.4 percent, with India's 562-thousand-tonne decline outweighing China's 171-thousand-tonne gain. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of peas actually eaten. China holds 1,201 thousand tonnes, or 21.4 percent of the 5,612-thousand-tonne listed total. India follows at 995 thousand tonnes (17.7 percent) and Ethiopia at 469 thousand tonnes (8.4 percent), with Bangladesh fourth at 251 thousand tonnes and the United States fifth at 241 thousand tonnes. The top three reporters hold 47.5 percent of the listed total, the top five 56.3 percent and the top ten 70.3 percent. Four reporters entered the 2023 comparison with a combined 71 thousand tonnes, led by Afghanistan at 64 thousand tonnes. Among the 155 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 5,370 thousand tonnes to 5,612 thousand tonnes, a gain of 242 thousand tonnes (4.5 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 155 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. China added 256 thousand tonnes (up 27.1 percent) and India added 238 thousand tonnes (up 31.4 percent), together accounting for more than twice the net increase, while Spain added 58 thousand tonnes (up 263.6 percent). Iraq fell 97 thousand tonnes (down 45.3 percent), Russia fell 97 thousand tonnes (down 31.9 percent), Argentina fell 90 thousand tonnes (down 64.7 percent), Canada fell 87 thousand tonnes (down 89.7 percent) and Pakistan fell 82 thousand tonnes (down 26.3 percent). For the 151 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply fell from 5,678 thousand tonnes to 5,541 thousand tonnes, a decline of 137 thousand tonnes (2.4 percent). The 2019 total includes 152 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 155; Fiji, with 5 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value, while Afghanistan, Angola, Azerbaijan and Laos entered with a combined 71 thousand tonnes. India fell 562 thousand tonnes (down 36.1 percent), while Colombia fell 91 thousand tonnes (down 55.8 percent), Bangladesh fell 70 thousand tonnes (down 21.8 percent) and Canada fell 55 thousand tonnes (down 84.6 percent). China added 171 thousand tonnes (up 16.6 percent), Iraq added 98 thousand tonnes (up 515.8 percent), Ethiopia added 80 thousand tonnes (up 20.6 percent) and Venezuela added 50 thousand tonnes from a zero base. India's five-year decline is the dominant fact in this table: down 562 thousand tonnes against a net fall of 137 thousand tonnes, with China, Iraq, Ethiopia and Venezuela adding 399 thousand tonnes between them. Small reporters swing wildly in percentage terms, with Spain up 263.6 percent on the year and Canada down 89.7 percent, while the per-capita ranking sits far from the volume leaders in Norway at 12.68 and Estonia at 10.35 kilograms per person per year. For FAO Food Balances, the peas figure used here is the amount of dry peas recorded under the Food element. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year, rather than a direct estimate of how much peas people actually consumed. Green peas and other vegetables recorded under their own items sit outside this figure. The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population. In 2023, China had the largest listed peas food supply among the 155 reporters with reported values, at 1,201 thousand tonnes. India ranked second at 995 thousand tonnes, while Ethiopia ranked third at 469 thousand tonnes. Norway had the highest per-capita peas food supply at 12.68 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of peas actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Peas from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the quantity actually eaten, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The reporter universe contains 156 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 5,612 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 155 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.Peas Food Supply at a Glance

Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country has the largest peas food supply?
China led in 2023 with 1,201 thousand tonnes against India's 995 thousand tonnes, a ratio of 1.21 to one, with Ethiopia a distant third at 469 thousand tonnes.
Why does Norway lead peas food supply per person?
Norway recorded 12.68 kilograms per person in 2023 from a listed food supply of 70 thousand tonnes. Small populations produce high per-capita values from modest totals, with Estonia second at 10.35 kilograms.
Is peas food supply the same as peas eaten?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
