China Takes 21.4 Percent of the 2023 Total

China opens the 2023 table at 1,201,307 tonnes (21.4 percent of 5,615,803), India at 994,823 and Ethiopia at 468,850. Bangladesh and the United States follow at 251,237 and 241,151 tonnes. The top three hold 47.5 percent, the top five 56.2 percent and the top ten 70.2 percent. Norway's per-person figure of 34.75 grams a day comes from 70,000 tonnes — far below the volume top ten — with Estonia at 28.37 and Djibouti at 26.14 behind.

Five Years Down 2.4 Percent Against India's Fall

The 166 reporters present in both 2019 and 2023 moved from 5,677,817 tonnes to 5,543,842 — down 133,975 tonnes, or 2.4 percent. Fiji left with 4,903 tonnes while Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Laos, Angola and Samoa entered with 71,961 between them, led by Afghanistan at 64,447 tonnes. India fell 562,310 tonnes (down 36.1 percent) while China added 171,294 (up 16.6 percent); Iraq added 98,563 (up 523.4 percent) and Ethiopia 79,698 (up 20.5 percent), with Colombia falling 90,656 (down 55.7 percent), Bangladesh 69,665 (down 21.7 percent) and Canada 54,982 (down 84.9 percent), while Venezuela added 49,629 from 371 tonnes.

2023 Added 4.6 Percent as Giants Gained

The 171 reporters present in both 2022 and 2023 moved from 5,367,531 tonnes to 5,615,803 — up 248,272 tonnes, or 4.6 percent, with none entering or leaving. China added 256,609 tonnes (up 27.2 percent) and India 237,445 (up 31.4 percent), while Russia fell 97,311 (down 32.0 percent), Iraq 96,480 (down 45.1 percent), Argentina 90,800 (down 65.1 percent), Canada 87,542 (down 89.9 percent) and Pakistan 82,189 (down 26.3 percent); Spain added 57,898 (up 262.7 percent).

Methodology

Every rate of change here runs from the earlier endpoint year to the later one, across reporters holding values at both ends. The tonne totals are element 5141, officially "Food supply quantity (tonnes)"; the daily grams per person are element 665, "Food supply quantity (g/capita/day)" — peas, dry, 2019 through 2023. Both series measure food available for human consumption in the reference year rather than intake. Zero in the base year means no percentage; zero reports zero, blank reports nothing.

The tables admit reporters only — 172 of them held a value in at least one year from 2019 through 2023 — with World, regional and China (aggregate) rows left out; China is the China reporter. Tonnes stand as FAO published them, unrounded, and the 2023 listed total of 5,615,803 tonnes adds the 171 reporters with a 2023 value.
