Fat of Pigs Consumption by Country

Vietnam ranked first in total pig fat supply in 2023, with 199,718 tonnes, narrowly ahead of the Philippines at 199,691 tonnes. South Korea ranked third at 99,494 tonnes, and Croatia led the per-person ranking at 6.59 grams a day. The listed 2023 total was 890,739 tonnes, and 115 of the 118 country rows reported a value for that year. These figures describe food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.

Brazil placed fourth by volume at 34,628 tonnes, and the three leading countries together accounted for about 56.0 percent of the listed 2023 total. The gap between the two leading countries was only 27 tonnes, so first and second place are effectively tied in this table.

• The Netherlands recorded the largest decline by tonnage in the latest year.
• Indonesia lost more than two-fifths of its 2022 level.
• Vietnam added 11,826 tonnes, widening a very narrow lead.
• Ireland moved from a reported zero to 10,590 tonnes.

Netherlands and Indonesia Lead the Latest-Year Declines

The Netherlands lost 12,249 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 27.6 percent to 32,089 tonnes. Indonesia lost 11,291 tonnes, down 41.2 percent, and South Korea shed 9,382 tonnes, down 8.6 percent. The Philippines added 4,876 tonnes, up 2.5 percent, Vietnam added 11,826 tonnes, up 6.3 percent, and Ireland moved from a reported zero in 2022 to 10,590 tonnes in 2023, a change for which no percentage is calculated. The shared total for the 113 countries present in both years fell from 897,496 tonnes to 890,736 tonnes, down 6,760 tonnes, or 0.8 percent, with Afghanistan and the Dominican Republic joining and none leaving.

Myanmar Records the Largest Five-Year Decline

Between 2019 and 2023, the 106 countries with a value in both years fell from 997,644 tonnes to 890,723 tonnes, down 106,921 tonnes, or 10.7 percent. Myanmar recorded the largest decline, losing 53,058 tonnes, down 69.8 percent. The Philippines shed 35,134 tonnes, down 15.0 percent, and Burkina Faso gave up 13,993 tonnes, down 42.6 percent. Malawi added 5,618 tonnes, up 36.1 percent, Colombia added 8,461 tonnes, up 42.4 percent, and Vietnam added 16,920 tonnes, up 9.3 percent. Cuba and Djibouti had a 2019 value but no 2023 value, while nine countries had a 2023 value but no 2019 value, and both counts describe data availability only.

Croatia Leads Pig Fat Supply per Person

Croatia recorded 6.59 grams a day in 2023, ahead of Ireland at 5.58 grams in second and Vietnam at 5.45 grams in third. South Korea sat fourth at 5.27 grams, with the Netherlands at 4.86 grams and the Philippines at 4.76 grams. Vietnam, first by volume, also placed third per person, while Croatia sits outside the top five by total tonnage, so the two rankings point to different countries.

What the Pig Fat Supply Data Measures

Fat of pigs available for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and in grams per person per day for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. Total tonnage and the per-person measure describe different aspects of the same recorded supply, and neither one shows how much people actually ate.

Seven countries reported zero in 2023, including Czechia after 9.65 tonnes in 2022, Oman after 24.92 tonnes, and Comoros after 0.01 tonnes. Ireland also reported zero in 2022 before returning to 10,590 tonnes. A reported zero is a recorded value, a blank cell is missing data, and a zero on its own does not show whether national supply stopped or whether reporting practice changed.

Methodology

The source is FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts. Element 5141 reports food supply quantity in tonnes and element 665 reports it in grams per capita per day, for fat of pigs, over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum country records with reported values, excluding regional and aggregate records. Of the 118 country rows, 115 reported a value in 2023 and 108 of those were above zero. Comparisons between two years use only countries with values at both endpoints, which gives 113 countries for 2022-2023 and 106 for 2019-2023, and the country count and both totals come from that shared set. Percentage changes use the earlier year as the base and are not calculated when that base is zero, which is the case for Ireland in 2022. Reported zeros are kept as values, blank cells are treated as missing, and values under 1,000 tonnes are shown to two decimals.
