China ranked first in total food supply of fresh, chilled or frozen pig offal in 2023, with 3,509,400 tonnes, or about 48.1 percent of the listed total. The Philippines ranked second at 462,559 tonnes, followed by Vietnam at 453,790 tonnes. Belgium ranked first in daily supply per person at 22.23 grams, ahead of Sweden at 19.89 grams. The listed 2023 total was 7,295,623 tonnes, and 161 of the 165 country rows reported a value for that year. These figures describe food available for human consumption, not actual intake.

Mexico placed fourth by volume at 357,904 tonnes, and the three leading countries together accounted for about 60.7 percent of the listed 2023 total. Total tonnage shows the scale of the recorded national supply, while grams per person per day gives a population-adjusted comparison, so the two rankings can differ.

• Brazil recorded the largest decline by tonnage in the latest year.
• Italy's reported supply fell by 17,540 tonnes.
• China added the most in volume, at 163,313 tonnes.
• Russia added 54,813 tonnes, up 21.2 percent.

Brazil Records the Largest Annual Decline

Brazil lost 21,465 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 9.0 percent to 216,026 tonnes. Italy lost 17,540 tonnes, down 16.6 percent, to 88,431 tonnes, and Switzerland fell from 15,571 tonnes to a reported zero. Vietnam added 69,610 tonnes, up 18.1 percent, Russia added 54,813 tonnes, up 21.2 percent, and China added 163,313 tonnes, up 4.9 percent. Every country with a 2022 value also reported one for 2023, so that shared total rose from 7,055,131 tonnes to 7,295,623 tonnes, up 240,492 tonnes, or 3.4 percent.

China Leads the Five-Year Increase

Between 2019 and 2023, the 156 countries with a value in both years rose from 6,153,885 tonnes by 1,141,737 tonnes, or 18.6 percent. China recorded the largest increase, adding 728,436 tonnes, up 26.2 percent. Germany entered with 185,709 tonnes after a reported zero in 2019, so no percentage applies to that country. Hong Kong recorded the largest decline, losing 116,308 tonnes, down 79.5 percent, and Myanmar shed 33,697 tonnes, down 69.8 percent. Five countries had a 2023 value but no 2019 value, while three had a 2019 value but no 2023 value, and both counts describe data availability only.

Belgium Leads Pig Offal Supply per Person

Belgium recorded 22.23 grams a day in 2023, ahead of Sweden at 19.89 grams in second and Congo at 14.44 grams in third. Liberia sat fourth at 13.15 grams, with Vietnam at 12.39 grams and South Korea at 11.15 grams. Belgium leads the per-person ranking despite a far smaller total supply than China, which ranked first by volume but seventeenth per person at 6.76 grams.

What the Pig Offal Data Measures

Edible offal of pigs, fresh, chilled or frozen, available for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and in grams per person per day for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. The per-person figure expresses daily food supply relative to population, and neither measure shows how much people actually ate.

Eleven countries reported zero in 2023, including Switzerland after 15,571 tonnes in 2022 and Slovakia after 9,881 tonnes, both worth checking against the source, along with Hungary and Türkiye. A reported zero is a recorded value and a blank cell is missing data, so a zero does not by itself show whether national supply stopped or whether reporting practice changed.

Methodology

The source is FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts. Element 5141 reports food supply quantity in tonnes and element 665 reports it in grams per capita per day, for edible offal of pigs, fresh, chilled or frozen, over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum country records with reported values, excluding regional and aggregate records. Of the 165 country rows, 161 reported a value in 2023 and 150 of those were above zero. Comparisons between two years use only countries with values at both endpoints, which gives the same set of countries for 2022-2023 and 156 of them for 2019-2023, and the country count and both totals come from that shared set. Percentage changes use the earlier year as the base and are not calculated when that base is zero, which is the case for Germany in 2019. Reported zeros are kept as values, blank cells are treated as missing, and values under 1,000 tonnes are shown to two decimals.
