FAO Supply Utilization Accounts record refined cane or beet sugar with added flavouring or colouring, plus maple sugar and maple syrup, available for human consumption, in tonnes and in grams per person per day, from 2019 through 2023. The file covers 172 reporters; 166 of them carry a 2023 value, adding to a listed total of 59,151 tonnes. The United States holds more than half the 2023 supply — after broad five-year gains reversed into a 12.2 percent single-year fall.

The United States reported the largest 2023 supply at 31,260 tonnes, while the Bahamas recorded the highest per-capita figure at 0.59 grams per person per day.

Five-Year Growth, Followed by a 2023 Decline

• The five-year total rose 30.8 percent, although Belgium recorded a sharp decline.
• The United States accounts for 52.8 percent of the 2023 total and also recorded the largest drop in 2023.
• Sweden is seventh by volume and second per person at 0.50 grams.
• Ghana added 833 tonnes from a 0.19-tonne base.

Five Years Added 30.8 Percent on Broad Gains

The common total moved from 45,174 tonnes to 59,072, up 13,898 tonnes or 30.8 percent across 156 reporters. The United States added 4,093 tonnes (up 15.1 percent), 29.4 percent of the net increase, with the Netherlands adding 2,974 (up 1,910.7 percent from 155.67 tonnes), Sweden 1,366 (up 242.1 percent), Australia 1,285 (up 99.3 percent), Italy 1,048 (up 223.0 percent), the United Kingdom 1,014 (up 37.6 percent) and France 922 (up 62.2 percent); Belgium fell 1,036 (down 94.5 percent). Five reporters left with 9 tonnes between them; ten entered with 79.

The United States Holds 52.8 Percent

The United States' 31,260 tonnes top the 2023 table at 52.8 percent of the listed total, 8.43 times the United Kingdom's 3,708 in second. The Netherlands follows at 3,130 with Germany at 2,775; the top three hold 64.4 percent, the top five 73.5 percent and the top ten 86.3 percent. Australia, France, Sweden, Italy, Spain and Ghana complete the ten. Per person, Sweden stands second at 0.50 grams from seventh by volume — while the Bahamas head the list at 0.59 grams from 86.44 tonnes.

2022 to 2023: Down 12.2 Percent

The common total moved from 67,365 tonnes to 59,151, down 8,214 tonnes or 12.2 percent across 166 reporters, with none entering or leaving. The United States fell 7,570 tonnes (down 19.5 percent), with the Netherlands down 1,003 (down 24.3 percent), South Korea down 321 (down 32.1 percent), Oman down 357 (down 75.5 percent) and Papua New Guinea down 286 (down 95.4 percent); Ghana added 833 tonnes from a 0.19-tonne base, with Sweden adding 703 (up 57.3 percent) and France 250 (up 11.6 percent).

Methodology

One hundred seventy-two reporters carry a value in at least one year from 2019 through 2023, and the tables print reporters only: World, regional and China (aggregate) rows are excluded, with China standing for the China reporter. Every percentage uses the earlier endpoint year as its base across reporters present in both years. Zero-base years produce no percentage, and percentages from tiny bases should be read with the base alongside.

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity tracks this mixed sweetener item in both measures: element 5141 in tonnes for totals, element 665 in grams per capita per day, 2019 to 2023. The quantity of interest is availability for human consumption in the reference year, not intake. A reported zero is treated as zero, while a blank value indicates that no value was reported. The 2023 listed total of 59,151 tonnes sums the 166 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes as published.
