Food Preparations of Flour, Meal or Malt Extract Consumption by Country
FAO Supply Utilization Accounts record food preparations of flour, meal or malt extract available for human consumption, in tonnes and in grams per person per day, from 2019 through 2023. The file covers 150 reporters, and 148 of them carry a 2023 value that sums to a listed total of 1,274,511 tonnes. Nigeria holds the largest 2023 supply, but the table is relatively dispersed: the top ten account for only 37.9 percent of the listed total.
Nigeria reported the largest 2023 supply at 82,140 tonnes, while Macau recorded the highest per-capita figure at 20.34 grams per person per day. Syria reported 221,677 tonnes in 2019, the largest supply in that year's table at 17.2 percent of the common total. By 2023 it reported 1,040 tonnes, a fall of 220,637 tonnes or 99.5 percent. The five-year common total moved from 1,287,524 tonnes to 1,141,018, down 146,507 tonnes or 11.4 percent across 140 reporters, so Syria's 220,637-tonne decline was larger than the overall net decrease, meaning gains elsewhere offset much of the loss. Indonesia traced a similar exit, from 71,127 tonnes to a reported zero in every year since 2020. Iraq fell 48,563 tonnes (down 51.5 percent) and Myanmar 32,092 (down 45.5 percent). Against those losses Haiti added 39,645 tonnes (up 267.1 percent), the United Kingdom 31,340 (up 146.6 percent), Bangladesh 28,504 (up 354.6 percent) and Yemen 26,366 (up 188.3 percent). Cuba's 5,615 tonnes and Namibia's 330 left the comparison, while eight reporters entered with 133,494 tonnes of newcomer supply, led by the United States at 60,492. Nigeria's 82,140 tonnes top the 2023 table at 6.4 percent of the listed total, 1.36 times the United States in second at 60,492. The top three reporters hold 15.5 percent between them, the top five 23.2 percent and the top ten 37.9 percent. The United States shows no value in any year from 2019 through 2022 and reaches second place on a single year of data; Vietnam, another reporter with no 2019 value, sits sixth at 40,803 tonnes. Haiti, the United Kingdom and Iraq come next in line, with Yemen, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Hungary closing out the ten. The common total rose from 1,157,782 tonnes to 1,211,727, up 53,945 tonnes or 4.7 percent across 145 reporters. Ghana drove the downside, falling 31,981 tonnes (down 88.9 percent) from 35,974 to 3,993, with Yemen down 20,953 tonnes (down 34.2 percent) and Sri Lanka down 9,891 (down 40.8 percent). Haiti pulled the other way with 23,374 tonnes added (up 75.1 percent), alongside the United Kingdom at plus 20,724 (up 64.8 percent), Iraq at plus 18,501 (up 68.0 percent) and Libya at plus 10,176 (up 66.1 percent); Angola also added 13,296 tonnes after reporting zero in 2022; because the base was zero, no percentage change is calculated. Three reporters entered with 62,784 tonnes and none left. Macau's 20.34 grams per person per day head the per-capita table from 5,299 tonnes: the per-capita value divides the reported total by population, so a modest total can rank near the top. Saint Lucia follows at 16.45 grams from 1,077 tonnes, and Haiti at 12.83 from 54,488 tonnes, third by volume and third per person. Gabon, Belize and Kiribati come next at 12.25, 10.50 and 10.22 grams, none of them inside the volume top ten. Hungary repeats the double at the foot of each list, tenth by volume at 30,941 tonnes and tenth per person at 8.75 grams. The FAO item covers prepared food products based on flour, meal or malt extract. It is separate from the raw cereal ingredients themselves, while the food supply quantity measure records what was available for human consumption during the reference year. A gram-per-day figure spreads that availability across the population, so it shifts with population as well as supply; Nigeria's 82,140 tonnes, for instance, translate to 0.99 grams per person per day. Nigeria had the largest 2023 listed supply at 82,140 tonnes, while Macau had the highest per-capita figure at 20.34 grams per person per day. The 2023 listed total was 1,274,511 tonnes across 148 reporters. Syria, the largest reporter in 2019 at 221,677 tonnes, reported 1,040 tonnes in 2023. These figures record food available for human consumption, not amounts actually eaten. Every percentage here compares reporters holding a value in both endpoint years, with the earlier year as the base; a zero base year yields no percentage. Country totals are FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity (element 5141, tonnes) and per-person values are the same measure in grams per capita per day (element 665), for food preparations of flour, meal or malt extract across 2019 through 2023. Supply quantity describes food available for human consumption in the reference year rather than food actually eaten. The file spans 150 reporters and the tables list reporters only: World, regional and China (aggregate) lines stay out, so China denotes the China reporter. A zero is a reported zero and a blank means nothing was reported. The 2023 listed total of 1,274,511 tonnes sums the 148 reporters carrying a 2023 value, taken in tonnes as FAO published them. Food Preparations of Flour, Meal or Malt Extract Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
How did Syria's supply change before its collapse?
Syria reported 157,024 tonnes in 2018, 221,677 in 2019 and 295,800 in 2020, then zero in 2021, 811.51 in 2022 and 1,040 in 2023. The figures trace the size of the rise and fall, but they do not identify what caused either.
How can the United States rank second with only a 2023 value?
Rankings use 2023 values only, and the United States reported 60,492 tonnes that year against blanks in every year from 2019 through 2022. A blank cell means no value was reported, which differs from a reported zero.
What does this table not show?
It does not explain why any series moved, and it does not measure what people actually ate: food supply quantity records availability for human consumption, before household losses or waste.
Data Disclaimer: Projected data (future years) are estimates based on mathematical models. Actual values may differ. Learn about our methodology →
