Malt Extract Consumption by Country
Nigeria held 201,968 tonnes of listed malt extract food supply in 2023, 36.6 percent of a 551,449-tonne total, after rising more than fifteen-fold from 13,061 tonnes in 2019. The five-year common total more than doubled, up 116.4 percent, with Nigeria supplying 66.3 percent of the net gain alongside India, Senegal, Indonesia and Thailand. The single year rose 17.8 percent as India rebounded from 914 tonnes to 58,184. Mauritania leads per person at 11.42 grams per person per day.
Nigeria leads at 201,968 tonnes after stepping up from 13,061 tonnes in 2019 to 190,000 in 2020 and holding above 190,000 since; India at 58,184 and Senegal at 57,815 follow at less than a third of the leader. Per capita Mauritania leads at 11.42 grams per person per day after rising from a reported zero in 2019 to 20,944 tonnes, followed by Senegal at 8.76 grams. The FAO dataset lists 116 reporters with malt extract values, although only 107 have a reported 2023 quantity. Nigeria, India and Senegal together hold 57.7 percent of the listed total, and the top ten hold 88.4 percent. Nigeria's rise from 13,061 to 201,968 tonnes dominates the five-year comparison, while India's collapse to 914 tonnes in 2022 and rebound to 58,184 in 2023 dominates the single year. Ethiopia fell to zero and Ukraine to near zero from larger 2019 values, while Mauritania rose from a reported zero to 20,944 tonnes. The 2023 table is led by Nigeria at 201,968 tonnes, with India second at 58,184 and Senegal third at 57,815. Thailand and Indonesia complete the top five at 43,865 and 43,702 tonnes, respectively. Nigeria holds 36.6 percent of the 551,449-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 57.7 percent of the listed total, the top five 73.5 percent and the top ten 88.4 percent. Per capita, Mauritania's 11.42 grams per person per day from 20,944 tonnes leads Senegal at 8.76 grams, while Nigeria, first by total, records 2.43 grams. Among the 103 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 465,297 tonnes to 548,187 tonnes, a gain of 82,890 tonnes (17.8 percent). The two years share the same 103 reporters in the comparison; France, Jordan, Lesotho and South Korea entered with a combined 3,262 tonnes and no reporter left. India added 57,270 tonnes from 914 tonnes, Thailand added 23,442 tonnes (up 114.8 percent), Senegal added 15,007 tonnes (up 35.1 percent), Nigeria added 7,810 tonnes (up 4.0 percent), and the Philippines added 5,340 tonnes (up 88.9 percent) and Italy added 3,355 tonnes from 592 tonnes. On the declining side, Guinea fell 9,222 tonnes (down 99.8 percent), Indonesia fell 5,532 tonnes (down 11.2 percent). India's rebound from 914 to 58,184 tonnes was the largest absolute annual gain, though smaller than the net increase. For the 95 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 244,803 tonnes to 529,696 tonnes, a gain of 284,893 tonnes (116.4 percent). The 2019 universe includes 102 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 universe includes 107; seven reporters with a combined 1,193 tonnes left the comparison, while 12 reporters with a combined 21,753 tonnes entered, led by the Philippines at 11,344 tonnes. Nigeria added 188,907 tonnes, India added 49,188 tonnes (up 546.8 percent), Senegal added 43,806 tonnes (up 312.7 percent), Indonesia added 40,872 tonnes, Thailand added 32,604 tonnes (up 289.5 percent) and Mauritania added 20,944 tonnes from a reported zero. Ethiopia fell 31,248 tonnes (down 100.0 percent) and Ukraine fell 21,766 tonnes (down 99.2 percent). Nigeria contributes 66.3 percent of the five-year net increase; India, Senegal, Indonesia and Thailand added a combined 166,470 tonnes, partly offset by falls in Ethiopia and Ukraine. Ethiopia's fall from 31,248 tonnes to a reported zero removed its entire 2019 supply; it had already reached zero in 2020. Nigeria's rise came in one step: 13,061 tonnes in 2019, 190,000 in 2020, then 214,395, 194,158 and 201,968 in the following years. Mauritania shows a similar shape, from a reported zero in 2019 to 3,734 tonnes in 2020, a peak of 26,767 in 2021 and 20,944 in 2023. Because such shifts are abrupt, the five-year growth figures should be read with caution; the FAO data do not explain them. This article covers the FAO item Malt extract rather than malt grain or malted beverages. Other malt products are therefore not included in this specific figure. The per-capita value expresses the reported food supply in population terms, showing how much was available per person per day. Mauritania records the highest value at 11.42 grams. In 2023, FAO data recorded 551,449 tonnes of listed malt extract food supply across 107 reporters. Nigeria had the largest total at 201,968 tonnes, followed by India at 58,184 tonnes and Senegal at 57,815 tonnes. Mauritania had the highest per-capita food supply at 11.42 grams per person per day. These figures represent food available for human consumption rather than a direct measure of how much malt extract people actually consumed. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity (Element 5141, tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 665, g/capita/day) for Malt extract from 2019 through 2023. The food supply quantity measure represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually consumed, because food available for human consumption is not the same as actual intake. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The reporter universe for this item contains 116 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Table quantities are shown in tonnes as reported, without additional rounding. The FAO dataset reports food supply quantity in tonnes and in grams per capita per day. The listed total of 551,449 tonnes is the sum of the 107 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value. Malt Extract Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did India's malt extract supply swing so sharply?
India reported 8,996 tonnes in 2019, 914 in 2022 and 58,184 tonnes in 2023. The figures record a collapse followed by a rebound, with a single-year gain of 57,270 tonnes, but they do not identify what caused either move.
Why did Nigeria, India and Senegal drive most of the five-year growth?
Nigeria added 188,907 tonnes, India 49,188 and Senegal 43,806 between 2019 and 2023, together 281,901 tonnes against a net listed gain of 284,893 tonnes. The figures show the scale of these increases, but they do not identify what caused them.
Is the food supply of malt extract the same as extract consumed?
No. The FAO food supply quantity measure records food available for human consumption. It does not directly measure how much people actually consumed, because food availability and actual intake are not the same.
