Freshwater Fish Consumption by Country

In 2023, China held 25,709 thousand tonnes of listed freshwater fish food supply, 39.8 percent of a 64,638-thousand-tonne total spread across 176 reporters. All 176 reporters with reported 2023 quantities have the same listed quantity as in 2022, leaving the total quantity unchanged at 64,638 thousand tonnes. Per-capita food supply values, however, can differ between the two years because they are population-adjusted. The real movement sits in the five-year window, where India added 1,219 thousand tonnes against a net gain of 1,324. Myanmar recorded the highest per-capita figure at 33.45 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.

Freshwater Fish Consumption

China leads at 25,709 thousand tonnes, 2.58 times India at 9,978. Per capita the order belongs to South and Southeast Asia: Myanmar at 33.45 kilograms from 1,811 thousand tonnes, then Cambodia at 29.46 and Laos at 26.92 kilograms. The United States, sixth by total, records 5.15 kilograms per person.

Freshwater Fish Food Supply at a Glance

  • China had the largest listed freshwater fish food supply in 2023 at 25,709 thousand tonnes.
  • India ranked second at 9,978 thousand tonnes, followed by Indonesia at 4,929 thousand tonnes.
  • Myanmar had the highest per-capita food supply at 33.45 kilograms per person per year.
  • The listed total was 64,638 thousand tonnes across 176 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed freshwater fish food supply increased by 1,324 thousand tonnes, or 2.1 percent.
  • The FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Key Takeaways

The 2022-2023 comparison is unusual because all 176 reporters with reported 2023 values show identical figures in both years. The five-year window is where the table shows measurable movement, with India accounting for 92.1 percent of the net increase.

China, the leader by a factor of 2.58, added just 50 thousand tonnes since 2019 (up 0.2 percent). Indonesia fell 369 thousand tonnes and Egypt 166 thousand tonnes as the largest offsets, while Bangladesh added 203 thousand tonnes. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of freshwater fish actually eaten.

Freshwater Fish Consumption by Country in 2023

The 2023 table is led by China at 25,709 thousand tonnes, with India second at 9,978 and Indonesia third at 4,929. Bangladesh and Myanmar complete the top five at 3,893 and 1,811 thousand tonnes, respectively.

China holds 39.8 percent of the 64,638-thousand-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 62.8 percent of the listed total, while the top five represented 71.7 percent and the top ten 82.0 percent. Because every 2023 value repeats 2022, this ranking describes both years at once.

No Measured Change Between 2022 and 2023: Every Reporter Repeats

Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed quantity stands at 64,638 thousand tonnes in both years, a change of zero. The same 176 reporters are present at both endpoints, and every reporter has the same quantity in both years. Per-capita values are not identical, however, because they are calculated on a population basis. The analysis below therefore focuses on the 2019 to 2023 quantity comparison, where values genuinely differ.

India Accounts for Most of the 1,324-Thousand-Tonne Five-Year Increase

For the 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 63,314 thousand tonnes to 64,638 thousand tonnes, a gain of 1,324 thousand tonnes (2.1 percent). The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 22 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. India added 1,219 thousand tonnes (up 13.9 percent), Bangladesh added 203 thousand tonnes (up 5.5 percent), Uganda added 96 thousand tonnes (up 15.1 percent) and the Philippines added 76 thousand tonnes (up 9.3 percent), while Indonesia fell 369 thousand tonnes (down 7.0 percent), Egypt fell 166 thousand tonnes (down 10.8 percent), Vietnam fell 102 thousand tonnes (down 5.9 percent) and China added just 50 thousand tonnes (up 0.2 percent).

India contributes 92.1 percent of the five-year net increase, followed by Bangladesh at 15.3 percent. Indonesia's 369-thousand-tonne fall is the largest single decline in the window. Per capita, Myanmar's 33.45 kilograms from 1,811 thousand tonnes lead Cambodia at 29.46 kilograms, while China, first by total, records 18.07 kilograms.

What Does the Freshwater Fish Food Supply Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Freshwater Fish recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of freshwater fish people actually ate. Marine fish recorded under separate items sit outside this figure.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Freshwater Fish Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, China had the largest listed freshwater fish food supply among the 176 reporters with reported values, at 25,709 thousand tonnes. India ranked second at 9,978 thousand tonnes, while Indonesia ranked third at 4,929 thousand tonnes. Myanmar had the highest per-capita freshwater fish food supply at 33.45 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of freshwater fish actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Freshwater Fish from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The 2022 and 2023 quantity values are identical for every reporter with reported data in both years.

The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 64,638 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there no year-on-year change in this table?

Every reporter with a 2023 value shows the identical 2022 quantity, so the 2022 and 2023 listed quantity totals match exactly at 64,638 thousand tonnes. The dataset as published contains no measurable movement between those two years.

Which reporter drove the five-year increase?

India added 1,219 thousand tonnes between 2019 and 2023, or 92.1 percent of the 1,324-thousand-tonne net increase. Bangladesh added 203 thousand tonnes against Indonesia's 369-thousand-tonne decline.

Is the food supply of freshwater fish the same as fish eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
