Key Takeaways

The fruits aggregate covers the fruit items in the FAO Food Balances classification, including citrus fruit, bananas, apples, grapes and other fruits, with wine grapes recorded separately. The volume table spans every continent while the per-capita table clusters in the Caribbean and the tropics.

China and India together contributed 41.7 percent of the five-year net gain, and Indonesia, Nigeria and Türkiye added strongly alongside them. The year-to-year change was smaller at 0.8 percent, with the United States falling while China, Türkiye and India rose. Pakistan's five-year decline of 2,076 thousand tonnes runs against the aggregate's growth.

China Holds 23.8 Percent as the Philippines Edges Iran for Ninth

The 2023 table is led by China at 162,691 thousand tonnes, with India second at 94,397 and the United States third at 58,117. Indonesia and Brazil complete the top five at 24,008 and 22,543 thousand tonnes, respectively. China holds 23.8 percent of the 682,356-thousand-tonne listed total.

The top three reporters accounted for 46.2 percent of the listed total, the top five 53.0 percent and the top ten 63.3 percent. The Philippines at 11,282 thousand tonnes and Iran at 11,178 differ by only 104 thousand tonnes for ninth place. Per capita, the Dominican Republic's 379.63 kilograms per person per year lead Guyana at 345.90 kilograms, while none of the top five by total appears in the per-capita top ten.

The United States Falls 3,896 Thousand Tonnes in a 0.8 Percent Annual Rise

Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 676,637 thousand tonnes to 682,356 thousand tonnes, a gain of 5,719 thousand tonnes (0.8 percent). The two years share the same 176 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. China added 3,125 thousand tonnes (up 2.0 percent), Türkiye added 2,435 thousand tonnes (up 19.9 percent), India added 2,087 thousand tonnes (up 2.3 percent), Vietnam added 1,256 thousand tonnes (up 14.4 percent), the Philippines added 1,185 thousand tonnes (up 11.7 percent) and Mexico added 1,031 thousand tonnes (up 6.1 percent), while the United States fell 3,896 thousand tonnes (down 6.3 percent), Italy fell 1,004 thousand tonnes (down 12.2 percent), Morocco fell 900 thousand tonnes (down 21.1 percent) and Nigeria fell 702 thousand tonnes (down 4.3 percent).

The United States' decline from 62,013 to 58,117 thousand tonnes is the largest absolute annual fall in the comparison. Nigeria's slip from 16,260 to 15,558 thousand tonnes is notable because Nigeria ranks among the largest five-year gainers, so its single-year move runs against its longer trend.

China and India Contribute 41.7 Percent of a 9.5 Percent Five-Year Gain

For the 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 623,307 thousand tonnes to 682,356 thousand tonnes, a gain of 59,049 thousand tonnes (9.5 percent). The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 1,791 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. China added 16,864 thousand tonnes (up 11.6 percent), India added 7,709 thousand tonnes (up 8.9 percent), Indonesia added 6,093 thousand tonnes (up 34.0 percent), Nigeria added 4,878 thousand tonnes (up 45.7 percent), Türkiye added 4,297 thousand tonnes (up 41.5 percent), the United States added 3,617 thousand tonnes (up 6.6 percent), Mexico added 2,638 thousand tonnes (up 17.4 percent) and Vietnam added 2,439 thousand tonnes (up 32.3 percent), while Pakistan fell 2,076 thousand tonnes (down 25.9 percent).

China contributes 28.6 percent of the five-year net increase and India 13.1 percent, so the two together account for 41.7 percent. Pakistan's fall from 8,028 to 5,952 thousand tonnes is the largest absolute five-year decline. Türkiye's rise from 10,344 to 14,641 thousand tonnes (up 41.5 percent) and Nigeria's from 10,680 to 15,558 (up 45.7 percent) are the steepest five-year gains among the top ten.

What Does the Fruits Food Supply Measure?

The numbers in this article come from the Fruits - Excluding Wine item in the FAO Food Balances, measured under the Food element as food available for human consumption during the reference year. A combined fruits total of this kind should not be read as an estimate of what people actually ate. The aggregate sums the fruit items, including citrus fruit, bananas, apples, grapes and other fruits, and several of those items are also covered in separate articles.

The per-capita measure converts the reported food supply into kilograms available per person during the year. It offers a population-adjusted view of the same item, which is why fruits look concentrated in populous countries by total but in Caribbean and tropical reporters per person.

Fruits Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, China had the largest listed fruits food supply among the 176 reporters with reported values, at 162,691 thousand tonnes. India ranked second at 94,397 thousand tonnes, while the United States ranked third at 58,117 thousand tonnes. The Dominican Republic had the highest per-capita fruits food supply at 379.63 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of fruits actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Fruits - Excluding Wine from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, because food available for human consumption is not the same as actual dietary intake. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities are shown in thousand tonnes as reported, without additional rounding. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 682,356 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value. This article covers the fruits aggregate; individual fruit items are treated in separate articles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the United States' fruits supply fall 6.3 percent in one year but rise over five years?

The United States stood at 54,500 thousand tonnes in 2019, rose to 62,013 in 2022 and fell to 58,117 thousand tonnes in 2023. The single-year decrease of 3,896 thousand tonnes sits inside a five-year net gain of 3,617 thousand tonnes. The figures show the size of the movements, but they do not identify what caused them.

Which top-ten reporters gained fastest over five years?

Nigeria's listed supply rose from 10,680 thousand tonnes in 2019 to 15,558 thousand tonnes in 2023, an increase of 45.7 percent, and Türkiye's rose from 10,344 to 14,641 thousand tonnes, an increase of 41.5 percent. These are the two steepest five-year gains among the top ten reporters. The figures show the size of the increases, but they do not identify what caused them.

Is the food supply of fruits the same as fruits eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
