France Records the Largest Annual Decline

France lost 2,122 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 42.7 percent to 2,842 tonnes. Norway lost 938 tonnes, down 12.6 percent, to 6,486 tonnes, and Germany shed 635 tonnes, down 13.7 percent. The United States added 18,894 tonnes, up 8.6 percent, Papua New Guinea added 6,650 tonnes, up 1.5 percent, and Ivory Coast added 1,940 tonnes, up 1.2 percent. The 78 countries with a value in both years rose from 1,843,474 tonnes to 1,876,295 tonnes, up 32,821 tonnes, or 1.8 percent, with South Korea joining the comparison and none leaving it.

Papua New Guinea Leads the Five-Year Increase

Between 2019 and 2023, the 73 countries with a value in both years rose from 1,848,672 tonnes to 1,876,294 tonnes, up 27,622 tonnes, or 1.5 percent. Papua New Guinea recorded the largest increase, adding 28,755 tonnes, up 7.0 percent. Ethiopia added 9,453 tonnes, up 11.3 percent, and Cameroon added 7,456 tonnes, up 10.2 percent. DR Congo recorded the largest decline, losing 21,691 tonnes, down 19.3 percent, while the United States shed 17,539 tonnes, down 6.8 percent, and the Netherlands gave up 16,453 tonnes, down 96.8 percent. Six countries entered the comparison with 2023 values and no 2019 value, while ten left it.

Papua New Guinea Leads in Total and Per-Capita Supply

Papua New Guinea recorded 116.64 grams a day in 2023, well ahead of Gabon at 32.55 grams in second and Botswana at 21.33 grams in third. Congo sat fourth at 21.16 grams. The same country therefore holds both the largest national total and the highest per-person figure by a wide margin, which is unusual across the items in this dataset.

What the Game Meat Data Measures

Fresh, chilled or frozen game meat available for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and in grams per person per day for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only, and the listed total is not a world figure that includes regional aggregates. Total tonnage shows the scale of reported food supply, while grams per person per day adjust the figures for population size.

Of the 91 country rows, 79 reported a value in 2023 and 70 of those were above zero. Nine countries reported zero tonnes in 2023. A reported zero is a recorded value and a blank cell is missing data, so the twelve rows without a 2023 value cannot be read as zero supply.

Methodology

The data come from FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts, using element 5141 for food supply quantity in tonnes and element 665 for food supply quantity in grams per capita per day, for game meat, fresh, chilled or frozen, over 2019-2023. The 2023 listed total sums every country row with a reported value for that year. Comparisons between two years use only countries with values at both endpoints, which gives 78 countries for 2022-2023 and 73 for 2019-2023, so the 2023 common-set totals of 1,876,295 and 1,876,294 tonnes each sit slightly below the overall 2023 total of 1,876,299 tonnes because the covered sets differ. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that base is zero. Reported zeros are kept as values, blank cells are treated as missing data, and values under 1,000 tonnes are shown to two decimal places.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which country has the highest game-meat supply per person?

Papua New Guinea ranked first in 2023 at 116.64 grams per person per day, followed by Gabon at 32.55 grams and Botswana at 21.33 grams.

Does the United States lead in total game-meat supply?

No. Papua New Guinea ranked first at 442,321 tonnes, while the United States ranked second at 239,582 tonnes in the 2023 table for that year overall.

Why is Papua New Guinea's per-capita figure so high?

The FAO data show a much higher reported supply per person in Papua New Guinea than in any other listed country, and the figures alone do not establish the underlying reasons for that difference.

Do these figures show how much game meat people actually eat?

No. They measure food available for human consumption, not actual dietary intake, so they describe national availability rather than what individuals ate in each country.

Why can the annual total differ from the five-year comparison total?

The annual total includes every country with a reported value for that year, while the five-year comparison includes only countries with usable values at both endpoints, so the country coverage of the two figures can differ.
