Glucose and Dextrose Consumption by Country
The United States lost 385,207 tonnes of listed glucose-and-dextrose supply in five years while China gained 194,593 and India swung from 341,252 down to 5,254 and back to 204,274 — leaving the 2023 total at 5,995,499 tonnes across 137 reporters, up just 1.9 percent. Hungary tops per person at 32.07 grams a day. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts track glucose and dextrose available for human consumption from 2019 through 2023, in tonnes and grams per person per day.
The United States reported the largest 2023 supply at 2,899,844 tonnes, 5.52 times Germany at 525,160, while Hungary recorded the highest per-capita figure at 32.07 grams per person per day from 113,401 tonnes. The United States opens the 2023 table at 2,899,844 tonnes (48.4 percent of 5,995,499), Germany at 525,160 and China at 259,209. Indonesia and Russia follow at 256,606 and 237,337 tonnes. The top three hold 61.4 percent, the top five 69.7 percent and the top ten 82.7 percent. Per person, Hungary leads at 32.07 grams a day — eleventh by volume and first per person — with the United States at 23.13 and Germany at 17.02 behind. For the 131 reporters with values in both 2019 and 2023, listed supply rose from 5,608,565 tonnes to 5,714,447, up 105,882 tonnes or 1.9 percent. The 2019 universe holds 133 reporters with values against 137 in 2023; Cuba and Kiribati left with 582 tonnes between them, while six entered with 281,051 — led by Indonesia at 256,606 tonnes. The United States fell 385,207 tonnes (down 11.7 percent) while China added 194,593 (up 301.2 percent); India fell 136,978 (down 40.1 percent) after its mid-window collapse, with Thailand adding 93,014 (up 148.2 percent), Vietnam 85,358 (up 476.4 percent), Argentina 73,241 (up 129.7 percent), Canada 53,061 (up 457.0 percent) and Germany 42,704 (up 8.9 percent). Across the 137 reporters with values in both 2022 and 2023, listed supply moved from 6,357,695 tonnes to 5,995,499, down 362,196 tonnes or 5.7 percent, with none entering or leaving. The United States fell 426,744 tonnes (down 12.8 percent) and China 279,198 (down 51.9 percent), while India added 199,020 tonnes (up 3,788.0 percent) from 5,254; Indonesia added 101,854 (up 65.8 percent), Thailand 54,423 (up 53.7 percent), Vietnam 30,622 (up 42.1 percent) and Egypt 30,430 (up 69.5 percent), while Argentina fell 55,803 (down 30.1 percent). The FAO item covers glucose and dextrose as a specific food item. It is reported separately from other sugar and sweetener categories, so those categories are not added to the figures here. Food supply quantity captures what was available for human consumption during the reference year. The gram-per-day figure spreads that availability across the population on a daily basis. The United States recorded the largest 2023 listed glucose and dextrose supply at 2,899,844 tonnes — 48.4 percent of a 5,995,499-tonne listed total across 137 reporters. Germany followed at 525,160 and China at 259,209 tonnes. Hungary had the highest per-capita figure at 32.07 grams per person per day. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten. All percentages use the earlier endpoint year as their base, across reporters present in both years. Totals are FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity in tonnes (element 5141); per-person values are the same measure in grams per capita per day (element 665) — for glucose and dextrose, 2019 to 2023. What is counted is supply available for human consumption in the reference year, not intake. No percentage comes from a zero base; reported zeros count as zero, blanks as no report. The universe is 139 reporters, shown as reporters only: no World, regional or China (aggregate) rows, and China here denotes the China reporter. Tonnes appear as FAO published them, without extra rounding. The 2023 listed total of 5,995,499 tonnes sums the 137 reporters carrying a 2023 value. Frequently Asked Questions
What happened to India's reported supply?
India reported 341,252 tonnes in 2019, 5,254 in 2022 and 204,274 in 2023. The figures trace the fall and the 3,788.0 percent rebound without identifying what caused either.
Why did five years barely move with such churn?
The United States fell 385,207 tonnes while China added 194,593 and India fell 136,978, with smaller moves filling the rest — leaving a 105,882-tonne net gain. The figures record the offset, not what caused each side.
How can Hungary top per person from eleventh place?
Hungary reported 113,401 tonnes against 32.07 grams a day, eleventh by volume and first per person. The per-capita figure expresses the reported food supply relative to population on a daily basis.
