Grapes Consumption by Country

In 2023, China had the largest listed food supply of grapes among 176 reporters, at 10,201 thousand tonnes, while Moldova had the highest per-capita figure at 89.01 kilograms per person per year. The 2023 listed total was 35,171 thousand tonnes, with India second at 3,112 thousand tonnes and the United States third at 2,587 thousand tonnes. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.

Grapes Consumption

China leads the 2023 ranking at 10,201 thousand tonnes, 3.28 times India at 3,112 thousand tonnes. Moldova tops the per-capita ranking at 89.01 kilograms per person per year from 229 thousand tonnes, ahead of Albania at 63.71 kilograms.

Grapes Food Supply at a Glance

  • China had the largest listed food supply of grapes in 2023 at 10,201 thousand tonnes.
  • India ranked second at 3,112 thousand tonnes, followed by the United States at 2,587 thousand tonnes.
  • Moldova had the highest per-capita food supply at 89.01 kilograms per person per year.
  • The 2023 listed total was 35,171 thousand tonnes across 176 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 175 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed grapes food supply decreased by 1,403 thousand tonnes, or 3.8 percent.
  • The FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Key Takeaways

China remained far ahead of the other reporters in 2023, with India and the United States forming a distant second tier. Türkiye and Egypt followed the top three, while Moldova stood out on a per-capita basis despite having a much smaller total supply. The gap between total and per-capita rankings shows how population size substantially changes the picture when grapes food supply is viewed on an individual basis.

Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 176 reporters with data in both years fell by 2,798 thousand tonnes, or 7.4 percent. China and Italy accounted for the largest individual declines, while India, Brazil and Afghanistan recorded notable increases. Since 2019, the common-reporter total has fallen 3.8 percent, although the overall change reflects both substantial declines and increases across individual countries. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of grapes actually eaten.

Grapes Consumption by Country in 2023

The 2023 table is led by China, whose listed food supply of grapes reached 10,201 thousand tonnes. India followed with 3,112 thousand tonnes and the United States with 2,587 thousand tonnes. Türkiye and Egypt completed the top five at 1,590 and 1,570 thousand tonnes, respectively.

China holds 29.0 percent of the 35,171-thousand-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 45.2 percent of the listed total, while the top five represented 54.2 percent and the top ten 69.6 percent. Italy records just 218 thousand tonnes in 2023 against 853 thousand tonnes in 2022.

China Falls 1,582 Thousand Tonnes as Supply Declines 7.4 Percent Between 2022 and 2023

Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply decreased from 37,969 thousand tonnes to 35,171 thousand tonnes, a decline of 2,798 thousand tonnes (7.4 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 176 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. China fell 1,582 thousand tonnes (down 13.4 percent), Italy fell 635 thousand tonnes (down 74.4 percent), Türkiye fell 598 thousand tonnes (down 27.3 percent), France fell 231 thousand tonnes (down 29.2 percent) and Russia fell 137 thousand tonnes (down 20.2 percent), while India added 259 thousand tonnes (up 9.1 percent), Brazil added 206 thousand tonnes (up 21.9 percent) and Afghanistan added 127 thousand tonnes (up 23.3 percent).

United States Declines by 582 Thousand Tonnes as Supply Falls 3.8 Percent Since 2019

For the 175 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply fell from 36,574 thousand tonnes to 35,171 thousand tonnes, a decline of 1,403 thousand tonnes (3.8 percent). The 2019 total includes 176 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 6 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value, while Micronesia entered with a reported zero. The United States fell 582 thousand tonnes (down 18.4 percent), China fell 503 thousand tonnes (down 4.7 percent), Iran fell 425 thousand tonnes (down 28.8 percent), Italy fell 406 thousand tonnes (down 65.1 percent), Türkiye fell 238 thousand tonnes (down 13.0 percent). Meanwhile, India added 554 thousand tonnes (up 21.7 percent), Brazil added 259 thousand tonnes (up 29.2 percent) and Egypt added 257 thousand tonnes (up 19.6 percent).

The United States, China and Iran recorded the three largest declines over the five-year period, although gains in other countries offset part of those losses. Italy's two-window path runs 624 thousand tonnes in 2019 to 853 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 218 thousand tonnes in 2023. Per capita, Moldova's 89.01 kilograms from 229 thousand tonnes led Albania at 63.71 kilograms, while China, first by total supply, recorded 7.17 kilograms.

What Does the Grapes Food Supply Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the grapes figure used here covers the FAO item Grapes and products excluding wine, recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year, rather than a direct estimate of the amount of grapes people actually ate. Wine is excluded from this item.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Grapes Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, China had the largest listed food supply of grapes among the 176 reporters with reported values, at 10,201 thousand tonnes. India ranked second at 3,112 thousand tonnes, while the United States ranked third at 2,587 thousand tonnes. Moldova had the highest per-capita grapes food supply at 89.01 kilograms per person per year, followed by Albania at 63.71 kilograms. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of grapes actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Grapes and products excl. wine from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 35,171 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Italy's grapes food supply collapse in both windows?

The FAO Food Balances data show Italy at 624 thousand tonnes in 2019, up to 853 thousand tonnes in 2022 and back to 218 thousand tonnes in 2023. This dataset alone does not establish the cause of those movements; the 2022-2023 fall of 635 thousand tonnes was down 74.4 percent.

Why does Moldova lead grapes food supply per person?
