Key Takeaways

In 2023, China led listed groundnuts food supply at 10,788 thousand tonnes, with India second at 5,139 thousand tonnes and Nigeria third at 1,867 thousand tonnes. The United States followed at 1,611 thousand tonnes after a 26.8 percent single-year rebound, with Indonesia fifth at 1,014 thousand tonnes. Niger's 14.66 kilograms per person per year lead the per-capita ranking, followed by Gabon at 12.46 kilograms.

Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 176 reporters with data in both years rose from 26,451 thousand tonnes to 27,670 thousand tonnes, a gain of 1,219 thousand tonnes (4.6 percent), with China, the United States and India adding a combined 1,455 thousand tonnes. Since 2019, the common-reporter total has grown 9.3 percent, with China and India adding near-identical amounts. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of groundnuts actually eaten.

Per capita, Niger 's 14.66 kilograms from 384 thousand tonnes lead Gabon at 12.46 kilograms, while China, first by total, records 7.58 kilograms and India 3.57 kilograms.

What Does Groundnuts Consumption Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the groundnuts figure used here is the amount of groundnuts recorded under the Food element. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year, rather than a direct estimate of how much groundnuts people actually consumed. Groundnuts are classified separately from other nuts, so this table complements rather than overlaps the nuts table.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Quick Answer

In 2023, China had the largest listed groundnuts food supply among the 176 reporters with reported values, at 10,788 thousand tonnes. India ranked second at 5,139 thousand tonnes, followed by Nigeria at 1,867 thousand tonnes. Niger had the highest per-capita groundnuts food supply at 14.66 kilograms per person per year, while Gabon ranked second at 12.46 kilograms.

These figures come from the FAO Food Balances and describe food available for human consumption rather than the amount of groundnuts actually eaten. The dataset covers 2019 through 2023, with some reporter-year observations missing.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Groundnuts from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the quantity actually eaten, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer.

The reporter universe contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 27,670 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are groundnuts and peanuts the same thing?

Yes. Yes. Groundnuts are peanuts; FAO uses the term Groundnuts for this food item in the dataset. Both names refer to the same crop in this table, which records 27,670 thousand tonnes of listed food supply for 2023.

Why did China and India add almost the same amount since 2019?

China added 823 thousand tonnes (up 8.3 percent) and India added 815 thousand tonnes (up 18.8 percent) between 2019 and 2023. Together they account for 69.6 percent of the 2,353-thousand-tonne net increase.

Is groundnuts food supply the same as groundnuts eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
