Colombia fell to the eleventh-largest country by horse population after losing 517,860 head, while Kazakhstan added 501,843 head. The figures below reproduce FAO Crops and Livestock Products records for item Horses, 2020-2024, reporting stocks quantity in head. The table lists 149 countries; 143 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 annual listed total is 54,137,480 head. The 2024 country list runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.

Mexico and the United States run nearly level: 6,421,075 head against 6,215,569, a gap of 205,506 head. The pair holds 23.3 percent of the listed total, with third and fourth at 5,702,612 and 4,683,233 head respectively.

Mexico had the largest horse population in the 2024 listed data with 6,421,075 head, followed by the United States with 6,215,569 head and Brazil with 5,702,612 head. Mongolia ranked fourth with 4,683,233 head.

Colombia fell 517,860 head (down 34.9 percent), while Kazakhstan added 501,843 head (up 13.0 percent) and Cuba fell 155,186 head (down 21.4 percent).

The totals listed for each year were 55,419,377 head (148 reporters) and 54,137,480 head (143 reporters); 5 reporters present in 2020 (largest: Germany, 453,662 head) are absent in 2024, while no new reporters joined. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals sum FAO Crops and Livestock Products stocks quantity (Element 5111) for item Horses, 2020-2024. For horses stocks, quantities are shown as whole head. The 2024 horses stocks ranking and shares use 2024 listed quantities. In the horses stocks data, zero means a reported nil or negligible stock; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. For horses stocks changes, only countries with quantities in both endpoint years enter the arithmetic. Stocks record the standing herd, not a production flow.
