Horse Meat Supply by Country
China reported the largest food supply of fresh or chilled horse meat in 2023, at 236,739 tonnes, about 29.2 percent of the listed total of 811,253 tonnes. Kazakhstan ranked second at 170,359 tonnes, followed by Mexico at 70,876 tonnes. Mongolia ranked first per person, at 48.75 grams per day. These FAO figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.
Horse Meat Supply by Country: Key Findings. China ranked first in horse meat food supply in 2023, with 236,739 tonnes, followed by Kazakhstan at 170,359 tonnes and Mexico at 70,876 tonnes. Together, the top three countries accounted for 58.9 percent of the listed total. Mongolia had the highest reported supply per person, at 48.75 grams per day, ahead of Kazakhstan at 22.96 grams. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten.
Mongolia ranked fourth at 61,064 tonnes, followed by Russia at 50,146 and Kyrgyzstan at 30,038. The dataset includes 97 countries and areas that reported a value in at least one year; 86 have a reported value for 2023, including thirteen reported zeros. Uruguay went from 4,582 tonnes to a reported zero between 2022 and 2023. Argentina lost 2,191 tonnes, down 20.7 percent. Mongolia shed 1,469 tonnes, down 2.3 percent. Liberia added 4,918 tonnes, up 869.4 percent, from 565.70 tonnes. Kazakhstan added 9,402 tonnes, up 5.8 percent. China added 30,557 tonnes, up 14.8 percent. The 86 countries with reported values in both years rose from 775,418 tonnes to 811,253 tonnes, up 35,835 tonnes, or 4.6 percent. Eswatini reported 0.83 tonnes in 2022 with a blank entry in 2023, which is missing data rather than a reported zero; no country first reported a value in 2023. Between 2019 and 2023, the 80 countries with reported values in both years rose from 627,719 tonnes to 811,132 tonnes, up 183,413 tonnes, or 29.2 percent. China added 88,832 tonnes, up 60.1 percent. Kazakhstan added 60,125 tonnes, up 54.6 percent. Mongolia added 21,069 tonnes, up 52.7 percent. Mexico lost 5,349 tonnes, down 7.0 percent. Russia shed 5,219 tonnes, down 9.4 percent. Argentina gave up 3,966 tonnes, down 32.1 percent. Albania, Comoros, Cuba, Djibouti, Ivory Coast and Libya reported values in 2019 but not in 2023, while Bhutan, Cambodia, Ghana, Namibia, Saint Lucia and Serbia first reported values in the window. Mongolia's 48.75 grams a day beat Kazakhstan's 22.96 in second and Kyrgyzstan's 11.63 in third. Iceland sat fourth at 4.90 grams. Total tonnage and per-person figures describe different measures: the first reflects overall volume, the second adjusts for population. This dataset follows the FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts item for horse meat, fresh or chilled. It reports food supply available for human consumption in tonnes and grams per person per day. Annual totals include countries with reported values for the relevant year, while year-to-year comparisons use only countries with data in both years. A reported zero is distinct from a blank value, which indicates missing data. Uruguay fell from 4,582 tonnes in 2022 to a reported zero in 2023, while Hong Kong fell from 499.66 tonnes and the Netherlands from 1,255 tonnes to zero. Liberia rose from 565.70 tonnes to 5,484 tonnes. Reported zeros are retained as supplied by FAO. Whether they reflect real changes in availability or changes in reporting cannot be determined from this table alone, so sharp moves to or from zero should be checked against the original FAOSTAT records. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts report horse meat food supply in tonnes under element 5141 and in grams per person per day under element 665. This page covers the 2019-2023 period. Annual totals sum the reporting countries and areas with a value for the relevant year; aggregate rows are excluded. Year-to-year comparisons include only countries and areas with values in both comparison years. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that value is zero. Reported zeros are retained, while blank cells indicate missing values. These figures describe food available for human consumption and should not be interpreted as direct measurements of the amount people actually ate.Horse Meat Supply
