Husked Rice Consumption by Country

Madagascar held 2,753,710 tonnes of listed husked rice food supply in 2023, 33.5 percent of an 8,213,938-tonne total, and also led per person at 241.84 grams per person per day. Nigeria fell from 3,929,995 to 743,201 tonnes over five years, a decline of 3,186,794 tonnes that was larger than the net decline across the common reporter group. The single year rose 5.1 percent as South Korea fell 52.4 percent while Madagascar, China, Pakistan, Ivory Coast and the United States added more than 100,000 tonnes each.

Husked Rice Consumption

Madagascar leads at 2,753,710 tonnes, 2.52 times Ivory Coast at 1,093,133, with Nigeria third at 743,201 and India fourth at 627,530. Per capita Madagascar also leads at 241.84 grams per person per day, followed by Ivory Coast at 96.10 and Liberia at 78.30 grams.

Husked Rice Food Supply at a Glance

  • Madagascar had the largest listed husked rice food supply in 2023 at 2,753,710 tonnes.
  • Ivory Coast ranked second at 1,093,133 tonnes, followed by Nigeria at 743,201 tonnes.
  • Madagascar had the highest per-capita food supply at 241.84 grams per person per day.
  • The listed total was 8,213,938 tonnes across 159 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 156 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed husked rice food supply decreased by 1,918,370 tonnes, or 18.9 percent.
  • The FAO food supply quantity measure represents food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Key Takeaways

Husked rice sits one processing step past paddy rice and one before milled rice, and its reporter universe of 160 is far wider than paddy's 20. Madagascar leads on both views, while Nigeria's decline has a large effect on the five-year comparison: without it, the common total would have increased.

The two windows move in opposite directions. The single-year common total rose 5.1 percent with Madagascar, China, Pakistan, Ivory Coast and the United States each adding more than 100,000 tonnes against South Korea's fall. The five-year common total fell 18.9 percent because Nigeria's decline outweighs the combined gains of Madagascar, Ivory Coast, Pakistan, the United States, Niger and Burkina Faso.

Madagascar Holds 33.5 Percent and Leads Per Person Too

The 2023 table is led by Madagascar at 2,753,710 tonnes, with Ivory Coast second at 1,093,133 and Nigeria third at 743,201. India and China complete the top five at 627,530 and 293,389 tonnes, respectively. Madagascar holds 33.5 percent of the 8,213,938-tonne listed total.

The top three reporters accounted for 55.9 percent of the listed total, the top five 67.1 percent and the top ten 80.8 percent. Nigeria stood at 3,929,995 tonnes in 2019, the largest supply that year, and now ranks third. Per capita, Madagascar's 241.84 grams per person per day lead Ivory Coast at 96.10 grams, so the volume leader is also the per-capita leader by a wide margin.

The Listed Total Rose 5.1 Percent in 2023

Among the 158 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 7,814,496 tonnes to 8,213,918 tonnes, a gain of 399,422 tonnes (5.1 percent). The 2022 total includes 159 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 159; Guyana, with a fraction of a tonne in 2022, had no reported 2023 value, while Micronesia entered at about 20 tonnes. Madagascar added 155,429 tonnes (up 6.0 percent), China added 153,312 tonnes (up 109.4 percent), Pakistan added 142,392 tonnes (up 297.6 percent), Ivory Coast added 130,374 tonnes (up 13.5 percent), the United States added 118,800 tonnes (up 169.9 percent) and Argentina added 85,658 tonnes (up 414.3 percent), while South Korea fell 223,675 tonnes (down 52.4 percent) and Bangladesh fell 96,078 tonnes (down 65.2 percent).

South Korea's fall from 426,916 to 203,241 tonnes is the largest absolute annual decline. The five gainers above 100,000 tonnes together added 700,307 tonnes, well beyond the net increase, with South Korea and Bangladesh absorbing part of it.

The Five-Year Common Total Fell 18.9 Percent

For the 156 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply fell from 10,132,287 tonnes to 8,213,917 tonnes, a decline of 1,918,370 tonnes (18.9 percent). The 2019 total includes 156 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 159; no reporter left the comparison, while three reporters with a combined 21 tonnes entered. Nigeria fell 3,186,794 tonnes (down 81.1 percent) and South Korea fell 82,625 tonnes (down 28.9 percent), while Madagascar added 505,662 tonnes (up 22.5 percent), Ivory Coast added 431,949 tonnes (up 65.3 percent), Pakistan added 190,238 tonnes from a reported zero, the United States added 129,120 tonnes (up 216.6 percent), Niger added 99,670 tonnes (up 690.3 percent) and Burkina Faso added 97,706 tonnes (up 75.5 percent).

Nigeria's fall from 3,929,995 to 743,201 tonnes removed more than four fifths of its 2019 supply and exceeds the net five-year decline on its own. Madagascar, Ivory Coast, Pakistan, the United States, Niger and Burkina Faso together added 1,454,345 tonnes, offsetting less than half of Nigeria's fall.

What Does the Husked Rice Food Supply Measure?

The numbers in this article come from the Husked rice item in the FAO Supply Utilization Accounts, the grain with its husk removed but not yet milled, recorded as food available for human consumption during the reference year. A husked rice total of this kind should not be read as an estimate of what people actually ate. Paddy rice upstream and milled rice downstream sit outside this figure, which is why this ranking differs from both the paddy rice and the rice and products tables.

The per-capita measure converts the reported food supply into grams available per person during the day. It offers a population-adjusted view of the same item, and here both views agree: Madagascar leads by total and per person.

Husked Rice Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, FAO Supply Utilization Accounts recorded 8,213,938 tonnes of listed husked rice food supply across 159 reporters with reported values. Madagascar had the largest total at 2,753,710 tonnes, followed by Ivory Coast at 1,093,133 and Nigeria at 743,201 tonnes. Madagascar had the highest per-capita husked rice food supply at 241.84 grams per person per day. These figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of husked rice actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity (Element 5141, tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 665, g/capita/day) for Husked rice from 2019 through 2023. The food supply quantity measure represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, because food available for human consumption is not the same as actual dietary intake. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 160 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities are shown in tonnes as reported, without additional rounding. The FAO dataset reports food supply quantity in tonnes and in grams per capita per day. The listed total of 8,213,938 tonnes is the sum of the 159 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value. This article covers husked rice; paddy rice, milled rice and rice products are treated in separate articles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the five-year total fall while the single-year total rose?

The 156-reporter common total fell from 10,132,287 tonnes in 2019 to 8,213,917 in 2023, an 18.9 percent decline driven by Nigeria's fall of 3,186,794 tonnes. The 158-reporter common total rose from 7,814,496 tonnes in 2022 to 8,213,918 in 2023, a 5.1 percent gain spread across Madagascar, China, Pakistan, Ivory Coast and the United States. The two comparisons cover different periods and different reporter sets.

Why did Nigeria's husked rice supply fall 81.1 percent over five years?

Nigeria's listed supply fell from 3,929,995 tonnes in 2019 to 743,201 tonnes in 2023. The figures record the size of the fall, but they do not identify what caused it.

Is the food supply of husked rice the same as rice eaten?

No. The FAO food supply quantity measure records food available for human consumption. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food availability and actual dietary intake are not the same.
