Infant Food Consumption by Country
In 2023, China held 213 thousand tonnes of listed infant-food supply, 23.6 percent of a 901-thousand-tonne total spread across 152 reporters, and China is also the reason the total shrank.
Its 113-thousand-tonne five-year fall exceeds the entire net decline, while Venezuela surged from 3 to 72 thousand tonnes over the same period. Macau recorded the highest per-capita figure at 3.01 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.
The top of the table is a study in opposites: China at 213 thousand tonnes against Venezuela at 72, one shrinking fast, the other exploding from 3. Per capita the order flips to small places, with Macau at 3.01 kilograms from 2 thousand tonnes and Venezuela second at 2.55. Strip out the two outliers and almost nothing happened here. China fell 113 thousand tonnes while Venezuela added 69, and the rest of the 152 reporters netted to nearly zero. That is the whole five-year story in one line: a giant shrinking, a small one exploding, and a flat field around them. The per-capita ranking belongs to a different universe, led by Macau at 3.01 kilograms from 2 thousand tonnes. Nothing else in the table behaves like Venezuela, whose listed supply rose from just 3 thousand tonnes in 2019 to 72 thousand tonnes in 2023, a 2,300.0 percent increase. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of infant food actually eaten. China alone accounts for nearly one-quarter of the listed total, while Venezuela contributes about one-twelfth. Together they hold nearly one-third of the 901-thousand-tonne listed total, with Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Italy rounding out a top five that stops at 41 thousand tonnes. Below that the table dissolves into single digits: most of the 152 reporters record less than 10 thousand tonnes. Venezuela is the only top-five reporter that sat outside the top fifty in 2019, climbing from 3 thousand tonnes (rank 54) to 72 in 2023. The concentration figures underneath, 39.4 percent for the top three and 63.3 for the top ten, describe China plus a long tail more than a competitive field. Among the 152 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, listed supply slipped from 917 thousand tonnes to 901 thousand tonnes. China's 40-thousand-tonne fall and Venezuela's 24-thousand-tonne fall did most of the damage, while Saudi Arabia's 27-thousand-tonne gain led a thin counterweight of the Dominican Republic, Algeria and Russia. Belgium and Tuvalu, with a combined 2 thousand tonnes in 2022, had no reported 2023 value. For the 152 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply fell from 970 thousand tonnes to 901 thousand tonnes, a decline of 69 thousand tonnes (7.1 percent). The 2019 total includes 153 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 152; Cuba, with a reported zero in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. Read the decliners first. China fell 113 thousand tonnes (down 34.7 percent), the United Kingdom fell 26 (down 49.1 percent), Vietnam fell 16 (down 51.6 percent) and Pakistan fell 9 (down 64.3 percent). Then the offsets: Venezuela added 69 thousand tonnes from 3 (up 2,300.0 percent), Saudi Arabia added 16 (up 41.0 percent), and Malaysia and Uzbekistan added 8 each (up 12.9 and 800.0 percent). China's fall alone equals 163.8 percent of the 69-thousand-tonne net decrease. Per capita, Macau's 3.01 kilograms from 2 thousand tonnes lead Venezuela at 2.55 kilograms, while China, first by total, records 0.15 kilograms. For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Infant food recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of infant food actually eaten. Other prepared foods recorded under separate items sit outside this figure. The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population. In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, China had the largest listed infant-food supply among the 152 reporters with reported values, at 213 thousand tonnes. Venezuela ranked second at 72 thousand tonnes, while Malaysia ranked third at 70 thousand tonnes. Macau had the highest per-capita infant-food supply at 3.01 kilograms per person per year. China also recorded the largest five-year decline among major reporters, while Venezuela recorded the largest increase, rising from 3 thousand tonnes in 2019 to 72 thousand tonnes in 2023. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of infant food actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Infant food from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The reporter universe for this item contains 155 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 901 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 152 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.Infant Food Supply at a Glance

Infant Food Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Which countries changed infant food supply the most between 2019 and 2023?
China fell 113 thousand tonnes between 2019 and 2023 while Venezuela added 69 thousand tonnes, and the remaining 150 reporters nearly cancel each other out around a net change of just 69 thousand tonnes.
How can Macau lead per capita with 2 thousand tonnes?
Macau recorded 3.01 kilograms per person in 2023 from a listed food supply of 2 thousand tonnes. Dividing a small supply by a small population produces the highest per-capita value in the table; Venezuela followed at 2.55 kilograms.
Is the food supply of infant food the same as infant food eaten?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
