Miscellaneous and Infant Food Consumption by Country

The United Kingdom held 859 thousand tonnes of listed miscellaneous food supply in 2023, 12.0 percent of a 7,155-thousand-tonne total that ended the five-year window just 6 thousand tonnes above where it started. Norway's fall of 309 thousand tonnes and Myanmar's of 126 were offset by gains in Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Venezuela. Grenada leads per person at 58.16 kilograms per person per year, and Hong Kong sits in both top tables at fifth by total and sixth per person.

Miscellaneous and Infant Food Consumption

The United Kingdom leads at 859 thousand tonnes, 2.38 times Saudi Arabia at 361, with the Philippines third at 337 and Australia fourth at 270. Per capita the order runs through small island reporters: Grenada at 58.16 kilograms from 7 thousand tonnes, then Barbados at 50.32 and Nauru at 42.88 kilograms. The United Kingdom, first by total, records 12.50 kilograms per person.

Miscellaneous Food Supply at a Glance

  • The United Kingdom had the largest listed miscellaneous food supply in 2023 at 859 thousand tonnes.
  • Saudi Arabia ranked second at 361 thousand tonnes, followed by the Philippines at 337 thousand tonnes.
  • Grenada had the highest per-capita food supply at 58.16 kilograms per person per year.
  • The listed total was 7,155 thousand tonnes across 166 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 166 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed miscellaneous food supply increased by 6 thousand tonnes, or 0.1 percent.
  • The FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Key Takeaways

The miscellaneous aggregate covers the infant food and miscellaneous foods items in the FAO Food Balances classification, which are also treated in separate articles. The aggregate consists of infant food and miscellaneous foods, recorded at 901 thousand tonnes and 6,255 thousand tonnes respectively in 2023.

With the net five-year change at 6 thousand tonnes, shares of the increase stop meaning much; the honest reading is offsetting moves of several hundred thousand tonnes on each side. The single year fell 3.3 percent on declines in Australia, the United States, Mozambique and Israel, partly offset by gains in Cambodia, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and the Philippines.

The United Kingdom Leads a 7,155-Thousand-Tonne Table

The 2023 table is led by the United Kingdom at 859 thousand tonnes, with Saudi Arabia second at 361 and the Philippines third at 337. Australia and Hong Kong complete the top five at 270 and 268 thousand tonnes, respectively. The United Kingdom holds 12.0 percent of the 7,155-thousand-tonne listed total.

The top three reporters accounted for 21.8 percent of the listed total, the top five 29.3 percent and the top ten 45.0 percent. The United States stood at zero in 2019 before reaching 91 thousand tonnes in 2023. Per capita, Hong Kong's 36.02 kilograms per person per year pair with its fifth place by total, a double presence matched by no other reporter in the top ten.

Australia and the United States Lead a 3.3 Percent Annual Fall

Among the 166 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply decreased from 7,401 thousand tonnes to 7,155 thousand tonnes, a decline of 246 thousand tonnes (3.3 percent). The 2022 total includes 167 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 166; Belgium, with 2 thousand tonnes in 2022, had no reported 2023 value. Australia fell 81 thousand tonnes (down 23.1 percent), the United States fell 79 thousand tonnes (down 46.5 percent), Mozambique fell 65 thousand tonnes (down 78.3 percent) and Israel fell 54 thousand tonnes (down 67.5 percent), while Cambodia added 67 thousand tonnes (up 98.5 percent), Saudi Arabia added 43 thousand tonnes (up 13.5 percent), Iraq added 42 thousand tonnes (up 25.5 percent) and the Philippines added 42 thousand tonnes (up 14.2 percent).

Cambodia's rise from 68 to 135 thousand tonnes nearly doubled its supply in a single year. Among the four declines highlighted above, Mozambique's fall from 83 to 18 thousand tonnes and Israel's from 80 to 26 were the steepest proportionally.

A Net Gain of Six Thousand Tonnes After Five Years of Offsetting Moves

For the 166 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 7,149 thousand tonnes to 7,155 thousand tonnes, a gain of 6 thousand tonnes (0.1 percent). The 2019 total includes 167 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 166; Cuba, with 17 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. Norway fell 309 thousand tonnes (down 71.0 percent), Australia fell 140 thousand tonnes (down 34.1 percent), Myanmar fell 126 thousand tonnes (down 95.5 percent) and China fell 113 thousand tonnes (down 34.7 percent), while Saudi Arabia added 153 thousand tonnes (up 73.6 percent), Hong Kong added 115 thousand tonnes (up 75.2 percent), the Philippines added 113 thousand tonnes (up 50.4 percent) and Venezuela added 100 thousand tonnes (up 137.0 percent).

Norway's fall from 435 to 126 thousand tonnes removed more than two thirds of its 2019 supply, and Myanmar's from 132 to 6 removed nearly all of it. Because the gains and declines nearly cancel each other out, contribution shares of the net change would obscure the real story: large movements in both directions produced almost no overall change.

What Does the Miscellaneous Food Supply Measure?

The numbers in this article come from the Miscellaneous item in the FAO Food Balances, measured under the Food element as food available for human consumption during the reference year. A combined miscellaneous total of this kind should not be read as an estimate of what people actually ate. The aggregate sums infant food and miscellaneous foods, and each of those items is also covered in a separate article.

The per-capita measure converts the reported food supply into kilograms available per person during the year. It offers a population-adjusted view of the same item, which is why miscellaneous supply looks concentrated in large reporters by total but in small island nations per person.

Miscellaneous and Infant Food Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, the United Kingdom had the largest listed miscellaneous food supply among the 166 reporters with reported values, at 859 thousand tonnes. Saudi Arabia ranked second at 361 thousand tonnes, while the Philippines ranked third at 337 thousand tonnes. Grenada had the highest per-capita miscellaneous food supply at 58.16 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of miscellaneous foods actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Miscellaneous from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, because food available for human consumption is not the same as actual dietary intake. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 168 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities are shown in thousand tonnes as reported, without additional rounding. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 7,155 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 166 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value. This article covers the miscellaneous aggregate; infant food and miscellaneous foods are treated in separate articles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the five-year total barely move despite large country changes?

The listed supply stood at 7,149 thousand tonnes in 2019 and 7,155 in 2023, a net gain of 6 thousand tonnes. Norway fell 309 thousand tonnes, Australia 140 and Myanmar 126, while Saudi Arabia added 153, Hong Kong 115 and the Philippines 113. The declines and the gains balance almost exactly.

Why did Myanmar's miscellaneous supply fall 95.5 percent over five years?

Myanmar's listed supply fell from 132 thousand tonnes in 2019 to 6 thousand tonnes in 2023. The figures record the size of the fall, but they do not identify what caused it.

Is the food supply of miscellaneous foods the same as food eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
