Kiwi Fruit Consumption by Country
China dominated the 2023 kiwi fruit supply table with 2,207,399 tonnes, or 56.9 percent of the listed food supply. Iran followed at 221,962 tonnes and Spain at 145,756, while New Zealand led by a wide margin on a per-person basis at 68.02 grams a day. The 2023 figures total 3,879,676 tonnes across 175 countries, 173 with values, covering food available for human consumption from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023.
Kiwi Fruit Supply by Country in 2023
China had the largest kiwi fruit food supply in 2023 at 2,207,399 tonnes, accounting for 56.9 percent of the listed total. New Zealand ranked first by per-person supply at 68.02 grams per person per day, more than three times Greece's 20.50 grams. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.
Italy placed fourth at 133,993 tonnes, with New Zealand fifth at 128,436 and France sixth at 91,573. The United States, Germany, Greece and Türkiye closed the top ten between 71,394 and 90,181 tonnes. The top three held 66.4 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 73.1 percent. China had the highest listed food supply, while New Zealand had the highest per-capita food supply. Iran added 162,640 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, up 274.2 percent to 221,962 tonnes. New Zealand added 114,126 tonnes from a small base to 128,436 tonnes. China added 28,111 tonnes, up 1.3 percent. Italy lost 136,198 tonnes, down 50.4 percent. Greece shed 28,255 tonnes, down 26.9 percent. Belgium went from 20,635 tonnes to a reported zero. The United States lost 13,434 tonnes, down 13.0 percent, and Türkiye 10,322 tonnes, down 12.6 percent. The 171 countries present in both years rose from 3,827,074 tonnes to 3,879,628 tonnes, up 52,554 tonnes, or 1.4 percent, with two arrivals carrying 48 tonnes. Between 2019 and 2023, the 166 countries present in both years edged from 3,801,224 tonnes to 3,879,571 tonnes, up 78,347 tonnes, or 2.1 percent. China added 133,810 tonnes, up 6.5 percent, accounting for 170.8 percent of the net gain. New Zealand added 106,240 tonnes, up 478.6 percent from a small base. Iran added 51,925 tonnes, up 30.5 percent. Türkiye added 14,249 tonnes, up 24.9 percent, and the Netherlands 13,378 tonnes, up 58.1 percent. Italy lost 108,807 tonnes, down 44.8 percent. Belgium went from 76,522 tonnes in 2019 to a reported zero in 2023. Russia shed 67,443 tonnes, down 87.6 percent. Two countries left with 63 tonnes, against seven arrivals with 105. New Zealand's 68.02 grams a day more than tripled Greece's 20.50 in second. Spain sat third at 8.33 grams, with Portugal at 6.75 and Iran at 6.71. Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and China followed below 6.2 grams. China, first by volume, placed only ninth per person. New Zealand's food supply stands far above every other country on a per-person basis. Kiwi fruit for human consumption is tallied in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. The latest figures are shaped by two large increases and two sharp declines. The per-person ranking also differs substantially from the volume ranking. New Zealand's 797.5 percent latest-year increase and 478.6 percent five-year increase both start from relatively small bases, so the percentages should be read alongside the underlying tonnage. Belgium's short-window zero follows 20,635 tonnes, a minor level that takes no warning; its long-window zero follows tenth place and takes one. No further zero follows a large value. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts file tonnage for human consumption under element 5141 and daily grams per person under element 665, shown for kiwi fruit across 2019-2023. Percentage changes are calculated from the earlier year's value; changes are not calculated from a zero base. The universe totals 175 countries after aggregates are removed, 173 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total of 3,879,676 tonnes is the sum of the 173 countries with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Who ranked second behind New Zealand per person?
Greece ranked second at 20.50 grams per person per day in 2023, far behind New Zealand, with Spain third at 8.33 grams per day and Portugal fourth at 6.75 grams.
How dominant was China in total supply?
China held 2,207,399 tonnes in 2023, or 56.9 percent of the listed food supply, and the top three together reached 66.4 percent of the listed food supply.
How much did Iran add in the latest year?
Iran added 162,640 tonnes, up 274.2 percent in the latest year to 221,962 tonnes, the biggest single latest-year increase in the file, far ahead of any other country.
Are these figures actual kiwi fruit consumption?
No. The figures measure food available for human consumption in the reference year, not actual intake, so they describe supply rather than the amounts people actually ate.
Why does Belgium's zero stand out?
Belgium went from 76,522 tonnes in 2019 to a reported zero in 2023, a large-value exit worth checking against the source, unlike smaller short-window zeros in the file.
Data Disclaimer: Projected data (future years) are estimates based on mathematical models. Actual values may differ. Learn about our methodology →
