Leeks and Other Alliaceous Vegetables Consumption by Country

Indonesia reported 631,643 tonnes of leek and alliaceous vegetable food supply in 2023, 31.8 percent of the listed total. France came second at 169,708 tonnes and South Korea third. On a per-person basis, Albania had the highest reported food supply at 38.74 grams a day. China shed 36,618 tonnes in the latest year, while the Netherlands gained. All figures describe food available for human consumption, not actual intake.

Indonesia accounted for 31.8 percent of the 2023 listed total for leeks and other alliaceous vegetables. Albania had the highest reported food supply per person. Across countries with data in both years, the total rose 1.0 percent from 2022 to 2023 and 2.5 percent from 2019 to 2023.

Indonesia Leads Total Supply

Indonesia led at 631,643 tonnes, 3.72 times France. South Korea sat third at 144,961 tonnes, ahead of Türkiye at 127,907 and Germany at 114,090. The top three held 47.6 percent of the 1,987,035-tonne total, and the top five 59.8 percent. Kazakhstan, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United States and Spain closed the top ten between 52,473 and 92,437 tonnes. Of 156 countries in the file, all but four carried a 2023 value.

China Falls, Netherlands Jumps

Across the 152 countries in both 2022 and 2023, supply grew 1.0 percent, from 1,968,197 tonnes, a gain of 18,838. China shed 36,618 tonnes, down 55.5 percent from 66,034, the largest fall in the file. The Netherlands added 31,061 tonnes, up 78.6 percent. Vietnam added 17,684 tonnes from 918. The United States added 16,849 tonnes, up 43.2 percent. France added 14,580 tonnes, while Belgium added 10,829 and Türkiye shed 10,473. One country left the table.

Türkiye Falls Most Over Five Years

Among the 143 countries in both 2019 and 2023, supply grew 2.5 percent, from 1,919,521 tonnes, a gain of 48,008. Türkiye recorded the largest decline, falling by 66,947 tonnes from 194,854 tonnes in 2019 to 127,907 tonnes in 2023. Indonesia added 52,971 tonnes, up 9.2 percent. The United States added 48,836 tonnes from 7,057, up 692 percent. The Netherlands added 41,809 tonnes, more than doubling from 28,765. Poland shed 33,700 tonnes, down 39.6 percent. Nine countries joined over the period, adding 19,506 tonnes, against three departures.

France Holds Second

France sat second at 169,708 tonnes, adding 14,580 in the latest year and 26,454 from 143,254 over five. Belgium, seventh at 80,529 tonnes, added 10,829 lately. Spain closed the top ten at 52,473 tonnes, shedding 14,482 over five years, down 21.6 percent.

South Korea Holds Third

South Korea sat third at 144,961 tonnes. Germany ranked fifth by volume at 114,090 tonnes but recorded only 3.70 grams per person per day. Kazakhstan, sixth at 92,437 tonnes, sat at 12.46 grams per person. The Netherlands, eighth at 70,574 tonnes, added 31,061 in the latest year and sits at 10.69 grams per person.

Key Findings

In 2023, Indonesia had the largest reported food supply of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables at 631,643 tonnes, accounting for 31.8 percent of the listed total. France ranked second with 169,708 tonnes and South Korea third with 144,961 tonnes. Albania recorded the highest reported supply per person at 38.74 grams per person per day. Across the 152 countries with data in both 2022 and 2023, the total rose 1.0 percent, while the 143 countries with data in both 2019 and 2023 recorded a 2.5 percent increase. These figures represent food available for human consumption rather than the amount actually eaten.

Albania Leads Per Person

Albania's 38.74 grams a day topped the per-person table, ahead of Belgium at 18.84 and Kazakhstan at 12.46. The Netherlands followed at 10.69 grams and Macau at 9.37. South Korea, third by volume, sat at 7.67 grams per person. Indonesia, the volume leader, sat at 6.15 grams.
