Nigeria's Table
Nigeria led at 356,682 tonnes, 5.97 times the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Cameroon sat third at 32,103 tonnes, ahead of Iran at 21,217 and India at 12,585. The top three held 88.4 percent of the 507,483-tonne total, and the top five 95.0 percent. Vietnam, Jordan, Congo, Taiwan and Mauritania closed the top ten between 2,261 and 6,741 tonnes. Of 128 countries in the file, 123 carried a 2023 value.
Across the 123 countries in both 2022 and 2023, supply eased 1.8 percent, from 516,763 tonnes, a loss of 9,280. Nigeria added 40,360 tonnes, up 12.8 percent, exceeding the net loss several times over. Egypt shed 26,071 tonnes, down 97.8 percent from 26,671. India shed 14,084 tonnes, down 52.8 percent, and Vietnam 4,443. Cameroon shed 2,398 tonnes. Kuwait fell 98.5 percent to 24 tonnes, and the Philippines 96.0 percent to 49. Vietnam added 6,563 tonnes from 178, one of the sharpest percentage rises in the file. India shed 5,415 tonnes, down 30.1 percent. Yemen fell to near zero from 3,810 tonnes. Iran shed 2,457 tonnes, while Jordan added 2,258, up 69.1 percent. Taiwan added 1,144 tonnes, up 62.6 percent. Fourteen countries joined over the period, adding 51 tonnes, against four departures. Cameroon sat third at 32,103 tonnes, easing 2,398 in the latest year after 34,501 in 2022. Its five-year path barely moved, from 32,695 in 2019. Per person, Cameroon sat second at 3.10 grams. The Democratic Republic of the Congo, second at 59,719 tonnes, added 74 over the latest year after 59,645. Iran, fourth at 21,217 tonnes, shed 2,457 over five years. India fell from 26,669 tonnes in 2022 to 12,585 in 2023, and from 18,000 in 2019. Nigeria's 4.29 grams a day topped the per-person table, ahead of Cameroon at 3.10 and the Democratic Republic of the Congo at 1.55. Congo followed at 1.44 grams and Jordan at 1.32. Iran, fourth by volume, sat at 0.64 grams per person. Vietnam sat at 0.18 grams despite its top-ten volume. This page follows the SUA item labelled Melonseed and counts only its rows; World, regional and aggregate rows are not in the table. The annual listed supply total sums the countries with a 2023 value. Food here means supply available for people to eat in the reference year, not amounts eaten. Nigeria was the largest reported source of melonseed food supply in 2023, with 356,682 tonnes and 4.29 grams per person per day. The Democratic Republic of the Congo ranked second at 59,719 tonnes, followed by Cameroon at 32,103 tonnes. Nigeria accounted for 70.3 percent of the listed 2023 total, while the combined total for countries reported in both 2022 and 2023 fell slightly. Egypt recorded one of the largest declines, dropping from 26,671 tonnes to 600 tonnes. For melonseed, tonnage follows element 5141 and daily grams follow element 665 across 2019 to 2023. A change is measured from the earlier year; none is stated from a zero base. Only countries present in both compared years enter a change. A reported zero is not a blank, and blanks never stand in for zeros. The file holds 128 countries after removing World, regional and aggregate rows; 123 carry 2023 values. The numbers describe food available for human consumption. Source: FAO FAOSTAT, compiled by StatsGeo.Egypt Vanishes, Nigeria Grows

Frequently Asked Questions
Who led melonseed supply?
Nigeria, with 356,682 tonnes in 2023, or 70.3 percent of the listed total, 5.97 times second-placed Democratic Republic of the Congo at 59,719 tonnes.
What happened to Egypt?
Egypt fell from 26,671 tonnes in 2022 to 600 in 2023, a loss of 26,071 tonnes or 97.8 percent, the largest single-year fall in the file.
How did melonseed supply change from 2019 to 2023?
Nigeria added 17,180 tonnes, more than the 13,459-tonne net gain, with Vietnam adding 6,563 from 178, partly offset by India shedding 5,415 tonnes and Yemen falling to near zero.
Who led per person?
Nigeria, at 4.29 grams per person per day in 2023, ahead of Cameroon at 3.10, while Iran, fourth by volume, sat at only 0.64 grams, with Congo at 1.44 per person.
Does this supply equal food eaten?
No. The figures measure food available for human consumption in the reference year, not actual intake, so they describe supply rather than the amounts people actually ate.
