Military Spending by Country (Current US$)

Military expenditure measures a country's military spending in a given year, expressed in current US dollars. The figures are based on the World Bank's World Development Indicators, which provide military expenditure data sourced from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). Our dataset includes 156 countries and territories, with values from 2019 to 2024. Military expenditure can vary substantially from year to year, reflecting changes in government spending and other economic, political, and security-related factors.

Countries With the Largest Military Expenditure in 2024

The United States recorded the highest military expenditure in 2024 at 997.3 billion US dollars, more than three times the figure of any other country. China ranked second with 313.7 billion, followed by Russia with 149.0 billion, Germany with 88.5 billion, and India with 86.1 billion. The United Kingdom (81.8 billion), Saudi Arabia (80.3 billion), Ukraine (64.7 billion), France (64.7 billion), and Japan (55.3 billion) complete the top ten.

The ten largest spenders account for 75.2 percent of the total military expenditure recorded across the 151 countries with 2024 data, while the top three alone represent 55.4 percent of that total.

Beyond the top ten, South Korea (47.6 billion), Israel (46.5 billion), Poland (38.0 billion), and Italy (38.0 billion) also report spending above 35 billion dollars in 2024. Australia (33.8 billion), Canada (29.3 billion), Türkiye (25.0 billion), and Spain (24.6 billion) follow, with Algeria rounding out the top twenty at 21.8 billion.

Military Expenditure Around the World

European countries feature prominently in the upper part of the ranking. Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Poland all report spending above 35 billion dollars in 2024. Ukraine's expenditure reached 64.7 billion in 2024, placing it eighth globally.

In Asia, China and India lead, followed by Japan (55.3 billion) and South Korea (47.6 billion). Pakistan reports 10.2 billion, Indonesia 11.0 billion, and Iran 7.9 billion. In the Middle East, Saudi Arabia (80.3 billion) and Israel (46.5 billion) record the largest figures.

In the Americas, the United States is followed by Canada (29.3 billion), Brazil (20.9 billion), and Mexico (16.7 billion). Several countries in the dataset report zero military expenditure in individual years, while others have missing observations for some years.

Largest Increases in Military Expenditure, 2019–2024

Ukraine recorded by far the largest relative increase in military expenditure among the countries highlighted here between 2019 and 2024, rising from 6.3 billion to 64.7 billion US dollars, an increase of more than 900 percent. Poland's spending grew from 11.8 billion to 38.0 billion over the same period, an increase of 222 percent, while Russia's expenditure rose from 65.2 billion to 149.0 billion, an increase of 128 percent. Israel (20.3 to 46.5 billion, plus 129 percent) and Germany (49.1 to 88.5 billion, plus 80 percent) also recorded substantial increases.

In absolute terms, the United States recorded the largest increase, with spending growing from 734.3 billion in 2019 to 997.3 billion in 2024, an increase of 263 billion. China added 73.3 billion over the same period (240.3 to 313.7 billion), while Russia, Ukraine, Germany, Poland, and Israel each added more than 25 billion.

Largest Decreases in Military Expenditure, 2019–2024

Lebanon recorded the largest relative decline among the countries highlighted here, with military expenditure falling from 2.3 billion in 2019 to 0.6 billion in 2024, a decrease of 73 percent. Nigeria's spending declined by 39 percent (1.9 to 1.1 billion), and Egypt's by 36 percent (3.7 to 2.4 billion). Zimbabwe recorded a decrease of 82 percent, although its absolute figures are small, falling from 0.5 billion to 0.1 billion.

In absolute terms, Brazil recorded the largest decline, with spending falling from 25.9 billion in 2019 to 20.9 billion in 2024, a decrease of 5.0 billion. Thailand (7.1 to 5.5 billion) and Iraq (7.6 to 6.2 billion) also recorded notable reductions.

Methodology

The statistics are based on the World Bank World Development Indicators dataset, indicator MS.MIL.XPND.CD (Military expenditure, current USD), which sources the underlying military expenditure data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The main country ranking uses 2024 data where available, covering 151 of the 156 countries and territories in our dataset. For countries without a 2024 observation, the latest available year within the 2019–2024 period is used.

Values are expressed in current US dollars and are not adjusted for inflation. Missing values are not treated as zero. Countries are included in the dataset when they have at least one available observation during the 2019–2024 period. Because military expenditure data are compiled using different national and international sources and may not follow perfectly uniform reporting practices across all countries, comparisons should be interpreted as estimates of military expenditure rather than perfectly standardized measures of defense spending.
