Milk Consumption by Country
In 2023, India held 125,732 thousand tonnes of listed milk food supply, 18.3 percent of a 685,509-thousand-tonne total spread across 176 reporters. The five-year increase was spread across several reporters, with India adding 22,406 thousand tonnes, Bangladesh 9,179 and China 7,542 against a net gain of 67,016. Denmark recorded the highest per-capita figure at 496.49 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.
India leads at 125,732 thousand tonnes, 1.62 times the United States at 77,730. Per capita the order belongs to Northern Europe: Denmark at 496.49 kilograms from 2,953 thousand tonnes, then Montenegro at 443.47 and Estonia at 339.35 kilograms. India records 87.43 kilograms per person. India added 22,406 thousand tonnes between 2019 and 2023, followed by Bangladesh with 9,179 and China with 7,542 against a net gain of 67,016. DR Congo rose from 85 to 5,141 thousand tonnes, while Ukraine fell 2,230 thousand tonnes. Denmark's 496.49 kilograms per person per year lead the per-capita ranking from just 2,953 thousand tonnes. Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 176 reporters with data in both years rose by 12,663 thousand tonnes, or 1.9 percent. India, Brazil, Russia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Germany and Iraq accounted for most of the largest increases, while Ireland fell 1,353 thousand tonnes. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of milk actually eaten. The 2023 table is led by India at 125,732 thousand tonnes, with the United States second at 77,730 and China third at 49,464. Brazil and Pakistan complete the top five at 34,448 and 32,104 thousand tonnes, respectively. India holds 18.3 percent of the 685,509-thousand-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 36.9 percent of the listed total, while the top five represented 46.6 percent and the top ten 60.9 percent. Ireland records 1,685 thousand tonnes in 2023 against 3,038 thousand tonnes in 2022. Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 672,846 thousand tonnes to 685,509 thousand tonnes, a gain of 12,663 thousand tonnes (1.9 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 176 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. India added 4,997 thousand tonnes (up 4.1 percent), Brazil added 2,077 thousand tonnes (up 6.4 percent), Russia added 981 thousand tonnes (up 3.5 percent), Pakistan added 959 thousand tonnes (up 3.1 percent), Bangladesh added 937 thousand tonnes (up 7.7 percent), Germany added 908 thousand tonnes (up 5.0 percent) and Iraq added 856 thousand tonnes (up 70.5 percent), while Ireland fell 1,353 thousand tonnes (down 44.5 percent). For the 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 618,493 thousand tonnes to 685,509 thousand tonnes, a gain of 67,016 thousand tonnes (10.8 percent). The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 1,189 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. India added 22,406 thousand tonnes (up 21.7 percent), Bangladesh added 9,179 thousand tonnes (up 237.1 percent), China added 7,542 thousand tonnes (up 18.0 percent), DR Congo added 5,056 thousand tonnes from 85 thousand tonnes, Pakistan added 2,756 thousand tonnes (up 9.4 percent), Brazil added 2,314 thousand tonnes (up 7.2 percent) and Mexico added 1,811 thousand tonnes (up 12.9 percent), while Ukraine fell 2,230 thousand tonnes (down 28.5 percent). India contributes 33.4 percent of the five-year net increase, followed by Bangladesh at 13.7 percent and China at 11.3 percent. Per capita, Denmark's 496.49 kilograms from 2,953 thousand tonnes lead Montenegro at 443.47 kilograms, while India, first by total, records 87.43 kilograms. For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Milk, Excluding Butter recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of milk people actually drank. Butter recorded under its own item sits outside this figure. The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population. In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, India had the largest listed milk food supply among the 176 reporters with reported values, at 125,732 thousand tonnes. The United States ranked second at 77,730 thousand tonnes, while China ranked third at 49,464 thousand tonnes. Denmark had the highest per-capita milk food supply at 496.49 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of milk actually drunk. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Milk, Excluding Butter from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually drunk, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 685,509 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.Milk Food Supply at a Glance

India added 22,406 thousand tonnes, Bangladesh 9,179 thousand tonnes and China 7,542 thousand tonnes between 2019 and 2023, together 39,127 thousand tonnes against a net gain of 67,016 thousand tonnes. Ukraine's 2,230-thousand-tonne fall was the largest offset in the window.
Why did Ireland's milk food supply fall 44.5 percent in one year?
The FAO Food Balances data show Ireland at 3,038 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 1,685 thousand tonnes in 2023, but this dataset alone does not establish the cause of the decline. The 1,353-thousand-tonne decrease was the largest single-year fall in the table.
Is the food supply of milk the same as milk drunk?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually drank, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
