China Holds 31.3 Percent While Myanmar Leads Per Person

The 2023 table is led by China at 123,272,135 tonnes, with India second at 92,640,890 and Indonesia third at 32,544,000. Bangladesh and the Philippines complete the top five at 28,337,808 and 14,891,086 tonnes, respectively. China holds 31.3 percent of the 393,632,794-tonne listed total.

The top three reporters accounted for 63.1 percent of the listed total, the top five 74.1 percent and the top ten 84.2 percent. Per capita, Myanmar's 465.94 grams per person per day lead Bangladesh at 452.79 grams, while China, first by total, records 237.41 grams.

The Listed Total Rose 0.3 Percent in 2023

Among the 173 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 392,273,111 tonnes to 393,632,648 tonnes, a gain of 1,359,536 tonnes (0.3 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from nearly the same reporters; Germany entered at 146 tonnes with no 2022 value. India added 1,184,166 tonnes (up 1.3 percent), Egypt added 811,035 tonnes (up 28.3 percent), Indonesia added 807,000 tonnes (up 2.5 percent), Bangladesh added 501,308 tonnes (up 1.8 percent), the United States added 455,955 tonnes (up 16.8 percent) and Cambodia added 255,074 tonnes (up 10.2 percent), while China fell 2,747,924 tonnes (down 2.2 percent) and Pakistan fell 850,000 tonnes (down 36.2 percent).

China's fall from 126,020,059 to 123,272,135 tonnes was twice the net increase in absolute terms, so the 0.3 percent rise describes combined gains elsewhere outweighing it.

The Five-Year Common Total Rose 4.5 Percent

For the 173 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 376,789,532 tonnes to 393,632,648 tonnes, a gain of 16,843,116 tonnes (4.5 percent). The 2019 total includes 174 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 174; Cuba, with 325,533 tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value, while Germany entered at 146 tonnes. India added 3,597,545 tonnes (up 4.0 percent), Myanmar added 2,764,767 tonnes (up 42.9 percent), Nigeria added 2,651,972 tonnes (up 158.0 percent), the Philippines added 1,112,544 tonnes (up 8.1 percent), Indonesia added 889,000 tonnes (up 2.8 percent), the United States added 664,176 tonnes (up 26.5 percent), Thailand added 659,924 tonnes (up 9.5 percent) and Tanzania added 565,945 tonnes (up 38.8 percent).

India contributes 21.4 percent of the five-year net increase, Myanmar 16.4 percent and Nigeria 15.7 percent, so the three together account for 53.5 percent. Nigeria's rise from 1,678,728 to 4,330,700 tonnes more than doubled its supply, while Cuba's exit removed 325,533 tonnes from the 2019 baseline.

What Does the Milled Rice Food Supply Measure?

The numbers in this article come from the Rice, milled item in the FAO Supply Utilization Accounts, the main milled-grain series, recorded as food available for human consumption during the reference year. A milled rice total of this kind should not be read as an estimate of what people actually ate. Rice milled from husked grain is recorded under a separate item, and rice products sit outside this figure.

The per-capita measure converts the reported food supply into grams available per person during the day. It offers a population-adjusted view of the same item, and here the two measures show a different pattern: China leads by total while Myanmar leads per person.

Milled Rice Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, FAO Supply Utilization Accounts recorded 393,632,794 tonnes of listed milled rice food supply across 174 reporters with reported values. China had the largest total at 123,272,135 tonnes, followed by India at 92,640,890 and Indonesia at 32,544,000 tonnes. Myanmar had the highest per-capita supply at 465.94 grams per person per day. These figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of milled rice actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity (Element 5141, tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 665, g/capita/day) for Rice, milled from 2019 through 2023. The food supply quantity measure represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, because food available for human consumption is not the same as actual dietary intake. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 175 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities are shown in tonnes as reported, without additional rounding. The FAO dataset reports food supply quantity in tonnes and in grams per capita per day. The listed total of 393,632,794 tonnes is the sum of the 174 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.
