Primary Energy Production from Natural Gas by Country
This page measures natural gas production in energy terms, using quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) rather than physical gas volume. The figures represent the energy content of dry natural gas production, measured before the gas is converted into electricity or used for other purposes. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 100 countries, with 99 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 156.1149 quad Btu in 2024, up from 153.5945 quad Btu in 2023.
The United States (39.1208 quad Btu) led in 2024, about 1.6 times Russia (24.3557 quad Btu). Iran (10.4046 quad Btu), China (9.1697 quad Btu) and Canada (7.3991 quad Btu) completed the top five. Empty means no reported value, not zero. The United States accounted for about 25.1% of the world total in 2024. The top two together held about 40.7%, the top three about 47.3%, the top five about 57.9%, and the top ten about 74.3%. That leaves roughly one-quarter of the world total outside the top ten, so natural gas production is concentrated among a relatively small group of major producers. Russia recorded the largest increase in absolute terms, rebounding from 22.6695 to 24.3557 quad Btu (+1.6862 quad Btu, about 7.4%). The world total rose from 153.5945 to 156.1149 quad Btu (+2.5204 quad Btu, about 1.6%), so Russia alone accounted for about two-thirds of the world increase. The largest decline among reported pairs was Egypt, falling from 2.1236 to 1.7553 quad Btu (-0.3683 quad Btu, about 17.3%). Russia's rebound was the biggest contributor to the year's increase, while China (+8.0%) and Norway (+6.4%) also recorded strong gains. Canada (+2.5%), Iran (+1.8%) and the United States (+0.3%) grew more modestly. Among the top ten producers, Qatar (-0.5%) and Algeria (-6.2%) were the only countries to decline, with Algeria recording the larger drop. Reported world values were 149.7209 quad Btu in 2019, 146.5848 quad Btu in 2020, 152.6585 quad Btu in 2021, 153.4517 quad Btu in 2022, 153.5945 quad Btu in 2023 and 156.1149 quad Btu in 2024. Production ended about 4.3% above the 2019 level. The series therefore shows a moderate net increase over the six-year period, despite the dip in 2020 and the uneven recovery that followed. Natural gas production is far less concentrated than coal production, where the top ten countries account for 94.5% of the total. Here, the top ten account for 74.3%, while the United States alone produces 25.1% of the world total. The ranking reflects energy produced, not natural gas consumed or exported. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual primary energy production from natural gas in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers natural gas energy production only and does not include other sources or consumption, which are reported separately in the source.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which countries produce the most energy from natural gas?
The United States (39.1208 quad Btu) and Russia (24.3557 quad Btu) reported the largest 2024 values, followed by Iran (10.4046 quad Btu), China (9.1697 quad Btu) and Canada (7.3991 quad Btu).
Why did Russia rebound in 2024?
Russia rose from 22.6695 to 24.3557 quad Btu (+1.6862, about 7.4%), about two-thirds of the world increase. The data shows the size of the rebound but does not identify the factors behind it.
What happened to Egypt?
Egypt fell from 2.1236 to 1.7553 quad Btu (-0.3683, about 17.3%), the largest decline among reported pairs. The series records the decline but does not provide an explanation for it.
Is this the same as natural gas consumption?
No. This page measures energy produced; consumption is reported as a separate series and can differ substantially for importers and exporters.
