Primary Energy Natural Gas Consumption by Country
Natural gas consumption as a primary energy source measures the energy content of natural gas consumed in each country, expressed in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year. The figures represent energy use within each country and can reflect both domestically produced and imported gas. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 127 countries, with 126 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 155.4510 quad Btu in 2024, up from 152.0863 quad Btu in 2023.
The United States was the largest consumer at 34.1793 quad Btu, followed by Russia at 18.1098 and China at 15.6800. Iran (9.8372) and Canada (5.1193) rounded out the five largest reported values. Empty means no reported value, not zero. Natural gas consumption was relatively concentrated at the top, with the United States alone representing about 22.0% of the 2024 world total. The top two together held about 33.6%, the top three about 43.7%, the top five about 53.3%, and the top ten about 64.4%. The countries outside the top ten together accounted for roughly 35.6% of the 2024 total. China's consumption increased by 1.0902 quad Btu in 2024, reaching 15.6800 quad Btu, a rise of about 7.5%. The world total rose from 152.0863 to 155.4510 quad Btu (+3.3647 quad Btu, about 2.2%). Bangladesh recorded the largest decline among countries with reported values for both years, falling from 1.1082 to 0.9963 quad Btu (-0.1119 quad Btu, about 10.1%). All five of the largest consumers increased their natural gas use in 2024. China posted the strongest growth at 7.5%, ahead of Russia at 5.3%, Canada at 3.0%, Iran at 1.7% and the United States at 1.5%. Reported world values were 146.0994 quad Btu in 2019, 144.7791 quad Btu in 2020, 151.7279 quad Btu in 2021, 150.2410 quad Btu in 2022, 152.0863 quad Btu in 2023 and 155.4510 quad Btu in 2024. Consumption ended about 6.4% above the 2019 level. World consumption reached its highest level of the six-year period in 2024, after dipping in 2020 and again in 2022. Production and consumption tell different stories across the major gas markets. China consumed 15.6800 quad Btu in 2024 compared with 9.1697 quad Btu of production, while Russia produced 24.3557 and consumed 18.1098. The United States was the largest producer as well as the largest consumer, with 39.1208 quad Btu of production and 34.1793 of consumption. These differences show why a consumption ranking should not be treated as a production ranking. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual primary energy consumption from natural gas in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers natural gas energy consumption only and does not include other sources or production, which are reported separately in the source.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which countries consume the most natural gas?
The United States (34.1793 quad Btu) and Russia (18.1098 quad Btu) reported the largest 2024 values, followed by China (15.6800 quad Btu), Iran (9.8372 quad Btu) and Canada (5.1193 quad Btu).
How much did China's natural gas consumption increase in 2024?
China rose from 14.5898 to 15.6800 quad Btu, an increase of 1.0902 quad Btu or about 7.5%, the largest increase among the top consumers.
Which country had the largest decline in 2024?
Bangladesh recorded the largest decline among countries with reported values for both years, falling from 1.1082 to 0.9963 quad Btu, a decrease of 0.1119 quad Btu or about 10.1%.
Is this the same as natural gas production?
No. This page measures energy consumed; production is reported as a separate series and can differ substantially for importers and exporters.
