Non-Hydroelectric Renewable Electricity Generation by Country
Non-hydroelectric renewable electricity generation by country measures the amount of electricity generated from non-hydroelectric renewable sources in each country, measured in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 130 countries with a reported 2024 value, from 2019 to 2024. The World total stood at 19.15 quad Btu in 2024, up from 16.93 in 2023.
Non-hydroelectric renewable electricity generation measures the electricity produced from non-hydroelectric renewable sources, as reported in the EIA dataset. China alone accounted for about 37 percent of the World total in 2024, and China and the United States together for about 54 percent; the top three countries accounted for about 59 percent, the top five for about 68 percent, and the top ten for about 78 percent. China's non-hydroelectric renewable electricity generation was about 2.1 times that of the United States, the second-largest generator. China generated the most non-hydroelectric renewable electricity in 2024 with 7.02 quad Btu. The United States ranked second with 3.39 quad Btu, followed by India (0.88), Germany (0.87), Brazil (0.79), Japan (0.54), the United Kingdom (0.46), Spain (0.42), Australia (0.30), and Türkiye (0.29). In Asia, China (7.02) leads by a wide margin, ahead of India (0.88) and Japan (0.54); South Korea (0.18) and Vietnam (0.17) also report notable volumes. In Europe, Germany (0.87) is the largest generator, followed by the United Kingdom (0.46), Spain (0.42), France (0.27) and Italy (0.26). In North America, the United States (3.39) leads, ahead of Canada (0.21) and Mexico (0.17). In South America, Brazil (0.79) leads, ahead of Chile (0.12) and Argentina (0.076). In Africa, South Africa (0.099) leads, ahead of Egypt (0.040) and Morocco (0.033), while in Oceania, Australia (0.30) is by far the largest generator. Non-hydroelectric renewable electricity generation figures are concentrated among the largest generators: the top five generators account for about 68 percent of World generation in 2024, while the top ten account for about 78 percent. China's share rose from about 24 percent in 2019 to about 37 percent in 2024, so the overall distribution shifted toward China during the period, with China remaining the largest generator in every year shown. China recorded the largest increase among the listed countries, rising from 5.72 quad Btu in 2023 to 7.02 in 2024 (up 1.29, about 22.6 percent). The United States rose by 0.30, and Brazil by 0.10. Japan recorded the largest decline, falling from 0.59 to 0.54 quad Btu (down 0.05, about 8.4 percent). France fell from 0.29 to 0.27 quad Btu (down 0.017, about 5.7 percent), while Switzerland declined by 0.0038. The World total rose from 16.93 to 19.15 quad Btu (up 2.22, about 13.1 percent). The trend between 2019 and 2024 shows variations across countries, with some recording steady growth and others experiencing fluctuations. The World total for non-hydroelectric renewable electricity generation moved between 10.46 and 19.15 quad Btu in this period. It was 10.46 in 2019, 11.68 in 2020, 13.34 in 2021, 15.2 in 2022, 16.93 in 2023, and then 19.15 in 2024. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values refer to non-hydroelectric renewable electricity generation, in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year as in the source, and 2024 figures are from the INTL.34-12 series where listed. Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of individually listed countries may not equal the World total where shown because of differences in coverage, estimates, and rounding. This page covers non-hydroelectric renewable electricity generation only and does not include other indicators, which are reported separately in the source.
