Renewable Electricity Generation by Country
Renewable electricity generation by country measures the amount of electricity generated from renewable sources in each country, measured in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 162 countries with a reported 2024 value, from 2019 to 2024. The World total stood at 34.55 quad Btu in 2024, up from 31.37 in 2023.
Renewable electricity generation measures the electricity produced from renewable sources, as reported in the EIA dataset. China alone accounted for about 34 percent of the World total in 2024, and China and the United States together for about 47 percent; the top three countries accounted for about 53 percent, the top five for about 61 percent, and the top ten for about 71 percent. China's renewable electricity generation was about 2.8 times that of the United States, the second-largest generator. China generated the most renewable electricity in 2024 with 11.88 quad Btu. The United States ranked second with 4.22 quad Btu, followed by Brazil (2.22), India (1.41), Canada (1.38), Germany (0.95), Japan (0.78), Russia (0.78), Spain (0.53), and Türkiye (0.53). In Asia, China (11.88) leads by a wide margin, ahead of India (1.41) and Japan (0.78); Vietnam (0.50) and Türkiye (0.53) also report notable volumes. In Europe, Germany (0.95) is the largest generator, ahead of Norway (0.53), Spain (0.53), France (0.51) and Sweden (0.41). In North America, the United States (4.22) dominates, followed by Canada (1.38) and Mexico (0.25). In South America, Brazil (2.22) leads, ahead of Colombia (0.28) and Venezuela (0.25). In Africa, Mozambique (0.06) and Zambia (0.06) report the largest volumes among the limited data, while values remain small compared with global totals. Renewable electricity generation figures are concentrated among the largest generators: the top five generators account for about 61 percent of World generation in 2024, while the top ten account for about 71 percent. The overall distribution remained broadly similar between 2019 and 2024, with China remaining the largest generator in every year shown. China recorded the largest increase among the listed countries, rising from 9.96 quad Btu in 2023 to 11.88 in 2024 (up 1.91, about 19.2 percent). The United States rose by 0.29, Brazil by 0.09, and India by 0.07. Japan recorded the largest decline, falling from 0.83 to 0.78 quad Btu (down 0.06, about 6.9 percent). Canada fell from 1.41 to 1.38 (down 0.03), while Romania declined by 0.01. The World total rose from 31.37 to 34.55 quad Btu (up 3.18, about 10.1 percent). The trend between 2019 and 2024 shows variations across countries, with some recording steady growth and others experiencing fluctuations. The World total for renewable electricity generation moved between 24.81 and 34.55 quad Btu in this period. It was 24.81 in 2019, 26.46 in 2020, 27.91 in 2021, 29.96 in 2022, 31.37 in 2023, and then 34.55 in 2024. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values refer to renewable electricity generation, in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year as in the source, and 2024 figures are from the INTL.29-12 series where listed. Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of individually listed countries does not equal the World total where shown, because the source includes estimates and rounding.
