Nuclear, Renewable and Other Energy Production by Country
Nuclear, renewable and other energy production by country measures nuclear, renewable and other energy production for each country, in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year. This groups nuclear energy with renewables and other energy sources, separately from coal, natural gas, and petroleum. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 211 countries, with 211 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 73.8163 quad Btu in 2024, up from 69.8905 quad Btu in 2023.
China (17.9020 quad Btu) overtook the United States (17.0714 quad Btu) at the top in 2024. France (4.3777 quad Btu), Brazil (3.8054 quad Btu) and Russia (3.0802 quad Btu) completed the top five. Empty means no reported value, not zero. China accounted for about 24.3% of the world total in 2024. The top two together held about 47.4%, the top three about 53.3%, the top five about 62.6%, and the top ten about 76.2%. China's position changed most dramatically in 2024, climbing from 15.7201 to 17.9020 quad Btu. That 2.1819-quad-Btu increase was enough to move China past the United States and represented about 56% of the year's 3.9258-quad-Btu increase worldwide. The world total rose from 69.8905 to 73.8163 quad Btu (about 5.6%). The largest decline among reported pairs was Indonesia, falling from 0.8366 to 0.3751 quad Btu (-0.4615 quad Btu, about 55.2%) — an unusually sharp single-year change that merits caution when reading the trend. The top five all grew: China (+13.9%), France (+11.4%), Brazil (+8.6%), the United States (+3.0%) and Russia (+1.2%). France's +11.4% was the second-fastest increase among the top five. Indonesia's -55.2% stands out as an unusually sharp single-year change that merits caution when reading the trend, given its size relative to every other move in the table. Reported world values were 62.8364 quad Btu in 2019, 63.0605 quad Btu in 2020, 66.0885 quad Btu in 2021, 67.6182 quad Btu in 2022, 69.8905 quad Btu in 2023 and 73.8163 quad Btu in 2024. Production ended about 17.5% above the 2019 level with growth in every year. At 73.8163 quad Btu, nuclear, renewable and other energy sources accounted for about one-eighth of world primary energy production (605.9095 quad Btu). China leads this category as well as total primary energy production, although the gap is much narrower here: 17.9020 quad Btu versus 17.0714 for the United States. The ranking reflects primary energy production rather than electricity generation alone. Nuclear and renewable energy are converted into a common Btu-based measure for comparison. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual primary energy production from nuclear, renewables and other non-fossil sources in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. Unusually large single-year changes, such as Indonesia's 2024 decline, are reported as recorded and are not adjusted. This page covers non-fossil energy production only and does not include fossil sources or consumption, which are reported separately in the source.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which countries lead non-fossil energy production?
China (17.9020 quad Btu) and the United States (17.0714 quad Btu) reported the largest 2024 values, followed by France (4.3777 quad Btu), Brazil (3.8054 quad Btu) and Russia (3.0802 quad Btu).
Did China just overtake the United States?
In 2024, yes: China reported 17.9020 quad Btu against 17.0714 for the United States, after growing 13.9% while the United States grew 3.0%. The table reports the values; the source does not state causes.
What happened to Indonesia?
Indonesia fell from 0.8366 to 0.3751 quad Btu (-0.4615, about 55.2%) in 2024. Such a sharp single-year change is unusual and merits caution; the source does not provide an explanation.
Is this the same as renewable electricity?
No. This page measures primary energy production from nuclear and renewable sources in a common Btu-based measure; electricity generation is reported separately.
