Offals Consumption by Country

China held 6,149 thousand tonnes of listed offals food supply, 31.0 percent of a 19,867-thousand-tonne total spread across 176 reporters. The per-capita crown sits far from the volume leaders: Mongolia at 32.51 kilograms per person per year from 112 thousand tonnes, against 4.32 kilograms in China. Between the endpoints the common-reporter total rose by 2,624 thousand tonnes, or 15.2 percent, with China and India supplying most of it. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.

Offals Consumption

Volume and per-capita order almost nothing in common here. China leads by total at 6,149 thousand tonnes, 5.96 times Brazil at 1,031, while Mongolia leads per capita at 32.51 kilograms, followed by New Zealand at 12.62 kilograms. Neither volume leader cracks the per-capita top five.

Offals Food Supply at a Glance

  • China had the largest listed offals food supply in 2023 at 6,149 thousand tonnes.
  • Brazil ranked second at 1,031 thousand tonnes, followed by India at 835 thousand tonnes.
  • Mongolia had the highest per-capita food supply at 32.51 kilograms per person per year.
  • The listed total was 19,867 thousand tonnes across 176 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed offals food supply increased by 2,624 thousand tonnes, or 15.2 percent.
  • The FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Key Takeaways

China and India accounted for much of the five-year increase. China added 1,027 thousand tonnes and India 521 thousand tonnes, together 1,548 thousand tonnes against a net gain of 2,624. Hong Kong fell by 252 thousand tonnes (down 87.2 percent) and Egypt by 224 thousand tonnes (down 46.6 percent), making them the two largest declines in the period.

Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 176 reporters with data in both years rose by 750 thousand tonnes, or 3.9 percent. Vietnam added 235 thousand tonnes (up 50.5 percent) and China 244 thousand tonnes (up 4.1 percent), while Hong Kong, India, the Philippines and others moved in smaller steps. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of offals actually eaten.

Offals Consumption by Country in 2023

The 2023 table is led by China at 6,149 thousand tonnes, with Brazil second at 1,031 and India third at 835. Russia and Mexico complete the top five at 788 and 739 thousand tonnes, respectively.

China holds 31.0 percent of the 19,867-thousand-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 40.3 percent of the listed total, while the top five represented 48.0 percent and the top ten 61.7 percent. The Netherlands rose from 18 thousand tonnes in 2019 to 167 thousand tonnes in 2023, an increase of 827.8 percent.

Short Window: Vietnam Surges 50.5 Percent as Listed Supply Rises 750 Thousand Tonnes

Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 19,117 thousand tonnes to 19,867 thousand tonnes, a gain of 750 thousand tonnes (3.9 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 176 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. China added 244 thousand tonnes (up 4.1 percent), Vietnam added 235 thousand tonnes (up 50.5 percent), South Korea added 81 thousand tonnes (up 31.4 percent), the Netherlands added 74 thousand tonnes (up 79.6 percent), Germany added 69 thousand tonnes (up 33.0 percent), India added 47 thousand tonnes (up 6.0 percent) and the Philippines added 46 thousand tonnes (up 7.6 percent), while Hong Kong fell 60 thousand tonnes (down 61.9 percent).

Long Window: China and India Drive the Five-Year Increase

For the 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 17,243 thousand tonnes to 19,867 thousand tonnes, a gain of 2,624 thousand tonnes (15.2 percent). The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 25 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. China added 1,027 thousand tonnes (up 20.1 percent), India added 521 thousand tonnes (up 165.9 percent), Vietnam added 204 thousand tonnes (up 41.1 percent), Germany added 188 thousand tonnes (up 208.9 percent), the Netherlands added 149 thousand tonnes (up 827.8 percent) and Russia added 149 thousand tonnes (up 23.3 percent), while Hong Kong fell 252 thousand tonnes (down 87.2 percent) and Egypt fell 224 thousand tonnes (down 46.6 percent).

China contributes 39.1 percent of the five-year net increase, followed by India at 19.9 percent. Hong Kong's fall from 289 to 37 thousand tonnes is the largest single decline in the window. Per capita, Mongolia's 32.51 kilograms from 112 thousand tonnes lead New Zealand at 12.62 kilograms, while China, first by total, records 4.32 kilograms.

What Does the Offals Food Supply Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Offals, Edible recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of offals people actually ate. Muscle meats recorded under their own items, such as bovine, pig and poultry meat, sit outside this figure.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Offals Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, China had the largest listed offals food supply among the 176 reporters with reported values, at 6,149 thousand tonnes. Brazil ranked second at 1,031 thousand tonnes, while India ranked third at 835 thousand tonnes. Mongolia had the highest per-capita offals food supply at 32.51 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of offals actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Offals, Edible from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 19,867 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which two reporters built most of the five-year increase?

China added 1,027 thousand tonnes and India added 521 thousand tonnes between 2019 and 2023, together 1,548 thousand tonnes against a net gain of 2,624 thousand tonnes. Hong Kong's 252-thousand-tonne fall was the largest offset in the window.

How can Mongolia lead per capita with 112 thousand tonnes?

Mongolia recorded 32.51 kilograms per person in 2023 from a listed food supply of 112 thousand tonnes. New Zealand followed at 12.62 kilograms per person, while China, first by total, recorded 4.32 kilograms.

Is the food supply of offals the same as offals eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
